"Perhaps I can be a little more forgiving of myself"
I often ride the #9 Ashland bus to get into the Loop. Last week, as I was standing at the corner of Ashland and Diversey, I noticed that someone had drawn "FORGIVE YOURSELF" on the walk. While I waited on the bus, I pondered this bit of unrequested psychological advice from the sidewalk.
Why do we sometimes find it so hard to forgive ourselves, even more so than forgiving others? Even when you consciously work to forgive others, are there still things that stick in your mind? Things that are reminders of faults or failings in the past that just won't seem to go away?
We know that God forgives us, a gift of mercy given to each of us without reserve. But then it is our turn. Niki Mallinak, a columnist for LifeTeen, writes, "Stop for a moment and ask yourself: If you had a friend who spoke to you the way you speak to yourself on the inside, would you stay friends with them? ... More often than not, we let ourselves get away with this behavior as if it’s no big deal, but would instantly know it was wrong if we were to say those things aloud to someone else or hear someone say it to us.
"The words we speak and the thoughts we think have more impact on us than we might think; the voices we choose to listen to can affect how we see ourselves, and then in time even the rest of the world. [If] all I repeat to myself is judgment grounded on what I have done wrong, I have to ask myself whose voice it is that I’m listening to – and I’ll give you a hint: it doesn’t belong to God."
We're at the end of the liturgical year, and next week is Thanksgiving and the First Sunday of Advent. My project for Advent is to be kinder to myself in my inner monologue. If I truly believe that God has forgiven me, and always will, perhaps I can be a little more forgiving of myself.
Peace!

The Saint Andrew Novena will begin on Saturday, November 22 and end on the Feast of Saint Andrew on November 30.

Dear Lord, we thank You for giving us St. Andrew the Apostle as an example of holiness. Help us to imitate his openness to Your call in our own lives, that we may be as ready to serve You as he was. St. Andrew, you were one of the first people to be called personally by Our Lord. He called you and your brother St. Peter to leave behind your lives as fishermen and to follow Him as Apostles.
You followed His call to become “fishers of men.” And you remained faithful to that call, staying with Him throughout His ministry and spreading the Gospel after His death. You probably never would have guessed that you would be invited to be one of the closest friends of the Son of God, but you left everything behind in order to follow Him. Pray for me, that I may be as ready to serve Christ as you were.
Please also pray for (mention your intentions here).
St. Andrew the Apostle, pray for us!
