Happy Pentecost Sunday! This day marks the Birthday of Holy Mother Church, with the gift of the Holy Spirit rushing upon the Apostles the beginning of the life of the Catholic (Universal) Church takes hold. The Apostles who were fearful and unsure, now arise from human frailty and participate in the divine nature of Christ with the great gift of the Holy Spirit. Their hearts are strengthened by grace, gifts are given to them for the stirring of the hearts of many to receive the gift of Faith and become citizens of the inbreaking of the Kingdom of Heaven. The reign of Our Lord has begun!
We are very blessed in our Parish to have as our patron one of the Twelve, St. Andrew. He was the brother of St. Peter and in many ways intercedes for the life of our Parish entrusted to his care. Remarkably, I came across a hidden gem tucked away on the third floor convent of the school: an original oil painting of St. Andrew that was dated 1931.The artist’s name was found on the back of the canvas, J.A. Mallin Chicago, IL. He was born in 1884 in the Czech Republic. He came to Chicago in 1907 in search of work. He had been trained in Vienna in the arts, especially in Church artwork.
“Mallin specialized in church decoration and ecclesiastical paintings as well as art glass and mosaics. His philosophy as stated in one of his brochures stated, “As there is nothing too good for God, so there is nothing too rich or too precious for God’s earthly homes, His churches….” In his lifetime, Mallin decorated more than 100 churches in the Midwest and throughout the U.S., including many churches with Polish, Czech or Slovak parishioners. Some examples include the Benedictine Convent in Lisle Illinois, St Mary of Czestochowa in Cicero, Illinois, St Edmunds in Oak Park, Illinois, and in Chicago, St. Mary of Perpetual Help, Holy Rosary Slovak Church, St. Mary of the Angels, St Hedwig, St Hyacinth, St. Jerome, St. John of God, St. Basil, and St Procopius” For more information on Jogn Mallin follow the link:
And so, in celebration of Pentecost and the sending forth of the Apostles to the ends of world so that all might know the Lord Jesus Christ and come to faith in Him, this wonderful painting of our patron saint now hangs in the vestibule of our church!! Thank you to all who made this beautification of our vestibule possible!
" Speak Another Person's Language"
Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, one of the important feasts in the Church calendar. It is fifty days since we celebrated Jesus’ resurrection. The Acts of the Apostles tells us that it was on the Jewish feast of Pentecost that the apostles were emboldened by the Holy Spirit to preach to Israel, assembled in Jerusalem. The disciples began to speak in the tongues of all nations, which was a sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit. And every foreigner present could hear the disciples speaking in their own native tongue.
This means that if we want to connect with others or the groups we serve, we need to speak a language that they can understand. This is the outward sign of a person who is filled with the Holy Spirit.
I remember that I once participated in a spiritual practice in a men's group. My mentor asked me, "What do you do when you encounter difficulties?" I said, "I talk to my best friend and my spiritual director." Then, he repeated my words: "Oh, you will talk to your best friend and spiritual director when you encounter difficulties." It was his simple repetition that made me realize that I had given up on myself and my own abilities and transitioned to relying on external forces. This skill of simply repeating what is said plays an important role in my practice as a therapist in China. Language and listening attentively makes for a trusting relationship that paves the way for growth.
In fact, speaking each other's language is something that everyone can do, and it is a basic skill that everyone needs to learn in daily life. The mutual understanding and communication between husband and wife will make for a deeper loving marriage. When parents and children speak each other's language, the barriers between them become opportunities for them to get to know each other and grow in their relationship. When bosses and employees speak each other’s language, there’s more momentum, efficiency and mutual understanding. When church members understand the worship and teaching, the prayers and sermons, they can participate more actively and deeply in the faith and in the communion with one another. The Holy Spirit brings people together and enables true discipleship.
Today we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church and to each of us. We received this gift at our Baptism and Confirmation. The Spirit is our guide on a daily basis if we seek his help and encouragement. On this feast of Pentecost we pray for the Spirit of God, the breath of life to renew the face of the earth and to renew us, so that we may know the healing love of God in our lives.
As is the custom at Saint Andrew, the 9:00 am Mass on Sunday, May 31st, will offer a blessing given for students graduating at any level of academic achievement, elementary school, high school, college or graduate levels. Please plan to attend the Mass in which we celebrate with you your accomplishment and ask God's blessings on your future endeavors.

Thank you so much to all our volunteers who made this year's Children's Garage Sale so successful! Our successes ranged from the teamwork that came with the event to the net profit of raising over $8,600 for Saint Andrew Parish and to the organizations that benefited from the items that didn't sell in the sale! It was truly a WIN WIN! Thank you Saint Andrew!
