"The election of Pope Leo tells us that with God, the seemingly impossible is attainable!"
A few weeks ago, as the cardinals gathered in Rome in preparation for the upcoming conclave, a friend of mine asked me if an American cardinal would ever be chosen. I responded emphatically, “absolutely not!” I explained the conventional wisdom which said that America is already a super power, and a wealthy nation, so the cardinals would be hesitant to have an American as well at the head of the Catholic Church. Within minutes of the announcement and introduction of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Prevost, born not only in the USA, but in Chicago of all places, my friend texted me to tease that we should have placed a bet so that he could have won some money. Thankfully, I am not a “betting man,” as I would have lost.
This time, losing was a good thing. Like everyone else, I experienced the joy of hearing an American had been chosen. And I felt a healthy dose of pride in knowing that the new Bishop of Rome was from Chicago, walked the same streets we do, and was raised and formed in his early years in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Many commentators have wondered if this historical papacy would have a positive effect on the Church in the United States. I sure hope it will.
Aside from all that, I discovered that the election touched something in me much more profound. I learned to never believe in impossibilities, like believing it was impossible for an American to be elected Pope. In the world of God, there are no impossibilities! Often times though, we convince ourselves that certain things are not feasible. We may think that the world will never find peace, or that poverty, racism, injustice, and xenophobia can ever be overcome. We may even give up on our government, the Church, people, or even ourselves, that they or we will never be able to change. And yet, the election of Pope Leo tells us that with God, the seemingly impossible is attainable!
Hopefully the events of the last few weeks can help to bolster our faith and give us courage to persevere in those areas of our lives where we find it hard to have hope. Patience is an integral element in this spiritual exercise. Pope Leo is the 267th Pope in the history of the Church, so it took some time for history to be made. Thankfully though, God will not make us wait that long. Just as God did in this conclave, God will act in our lives and bring about change when the moment is right. God knows when we are ready for whatever we long for to finally become ours. When those moments come, we will feel a joy that will overshadow the joy we felt a little over a week ago. And, there will be no losses, only wins!

The Better Together Covenant was created to strengthen the ways St Benedict Parish and Saint Andrew parish work together to support the surrounding community and each other. One of the ways the covenant team hopes to support our community is through addressing hunger in our neighborhood.
On Saturday, June 14th from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM all Saint Andrew and St. Benedict parishioners are invited to serve our community, with the covenant team, in packing bag lunches for our hungry neighbors in need.
Can’t attend? You can still support this effort by helping to cover the cost of supplies. Donations to the project can be made. A link to the donation site will be available next week.
It is becoming a thing... Young Adults in the parish who are in their 20s and 30s are invited to join us in the old chapel (gathering hall) after the 5:00pm on the first and third Sundays of the month (including May 18) to share some drinks and snacks as we build community here in the Lakeview neighborhood. The event is free. Come join us!
We are saddened by the recent announcement that Fr. Sergio Romo, pastor of Saint Andrew Parish for 16 years has been appointed by Archbishop Cardinal Cupich to be the new pastor at Saint Gertrude Parish in Edgewater even as we celebrate this next step in his ministry!
Fr. Sergio will have his final Mass at Saint Andrew Parish at 4:00pm on Saturday, June 14, 2025 with a reception to follow. We encourage parishioners to attend and to send Fr. Sergio off with our prayers and support
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
The covenant between Saint Andrew and Saint Benedict Parishes has been created to
unite some of our efforts to follow Christ and extend His mercy to all, while maintaining
our unique identities. One way to do this is to collaborate on events, as we have done
with our Lenten parish mission the past few years.
In an effort to extend Christ’s mercy beyond our parishes, we will be gathering on June
14 to assist with Uncle Pete’s Lunch Ministry. This ministry provides an opportunity to
share God’s love with those who may need it most, while getting to know our covenant
partners.
We are planning additional events and connection opportunities and can always use
your help. Do you have skills and talents you want to share? Are you a Powerpoint wiz
or a super-organizer? Have you built your own bookshelf or knitted caps for all your
grandchildren? Many hands (and brains) make light work and we invite you to get
involved! Please reach out to any of the Team Leads for more information:

We are thrilled to share our 2025 WTG financial results!! Each net revenue category is very similar to 2024's WTG totals. The big difference from last year to this year is what was raised for the Fund A Need project. This year and last years project revenue goal was almost the same ($90K in 2024 and $85K in 2025). Last year $96,875 was raised (including the donation from the Cubs). This year $74,435 has been raised (including the donation from the Cubs). There's still time to reach our goal (see below).
We couldn't have reached these results without the generous support of our Sponsors, Advertisers, and Benefactors! To all our Saint Andrew families, community and neighbors, thank you for your strong and ongoing commitment to the Parish. And a very special thank you to our WTG committee chairs, members and countless volunteers, Wearin' the Green would not be a success without your hard work and dedication.
