Life Giving Team Work
After 4 yours of waiting and processing my papers, I finally have arrived in St Andrew’s Parish to begin my pastoral duties as assistant pastor.
I am grateful for the welcome I have received from Fr Sergio, David, Deacon Mark, the parish team and the parishioners. During my interview with Fr Sergio, he made aware that the parish was run by a team. I have eight years of overseas experience as a student so I have been exposed to being part of part of a team. I am looking forward to working with the parish team. Due to the pandemic and the strict rules regarding quarantine in China I had very little involvement with any form of teamwork. I am now at St Andrew Parish and I am no longer alone I am part of a team which is supportive as well as challenging. I am happy to be part of the parish team.
Group dynamics and most relationships in China are based on the concept of “saving face” which is a strong social and cultural norm. One must always be seen to ‘save face’ that is to present the best face to the public. Disagreement in public or taking a view opposite to the prevailing position is not acceptable. If you cause someone to lose face in public it is a serious breach of relationships. Because of this discussions do not tend to be free or open.
When I attended the parish team meeting here in St. Andrew’s, I saw team members were free and frank in their discussion. I was amazed by the freedom each member had in sharing their opinions, insights, understanding and in seeking clarification, I realized that this is the team that I have been wanting to belong to and feel that I can make a positive contribution too. I also recognize that I have to bring openness to the team and to respect the opinions of the other team members. There is no need to feel threatened by them if their opinions are different than mind or if we disagree over some points, it is all part of belonging to a team. What is important is that we treat each other with respect and dignity even when their beliefs or opinions are different from my own.
In the Christian community we are called to respect the dignity of the other person. In doing so we show respect for God. From my experience of the parish team and volunteers. I feel that I encountered God in and through the members and in the discussion that took place. Each sought what is best for the parish and the building up of the community and the kingdom of God amongst us. I was reminded of the descriptions of the early Christian community which is found in Acts 2: 42 “These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to the brotherhood, to the breaking of the bread and to their prayers”.
The North Side Kairos has been a collaborative effort by Chicago parishes for over 20 years. The retreat is now accepting registration for youth attendees to be held on August 8 through August 11, 2024. To be eligible to attend, a youth participant must have completed their Sophomore, Junior, or Senior year of high school this past academic year (2023-24).
