Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
"Who is my neighbor?" Luke 10:2
The parish office is currently keeping summer hours. The new office schedule will be as follows. The office will be opened from Monday thru Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm, on Saturdays from 9:00am to 3:00pm and on Sundays from 9:00am to noon.
Join us for Mass every weekend at the 4:00pm (vigil) Mass on Saturday, or on Sunday at 9:00am, 11:00am, or 5:00pm.
I won’t mention the word, “school”, because there is still so much more summer to enjoy. In the midst of summer fun and planning outings we might find ourselves a bit hurried. There is a natural desire in the heart to make every moment of summer perfect and the best moments last. We live now in an age where “smart everything” captures, records, posts, and filters every moment before our very eyes. Yet, it is not the best way of savoring the moment—to truly live in that moment.
I got off social media years ago when I was in seminary, just my own choice. I was amazed how much anxiety was removed from my mind (after a couple of weeks of adjusting to not checking it constantly). It forced me to reconsider how to capture a moment that I want to linger in.
I offer this small reflection that was sent to me by a dear friend, entitled, Small Moments:
If today feels a little heavy, remember that
even the smallest moments can spark joy.
Maybe it’s a cup of coffee, the sound of a
song that lifts your spirits, or simply taking
a deep breath and feeling the warmth of the
sun on your face. Life moves fast, but there’s
always something around us worth appreciating.
Let today be a reminder that happiness doesn’t
always have to be grand—it can be found in the
little things.
Notice in these words the sensory descriptions. The way in which God formed our memory to function is a wonder in it of itself. When you’re in a moment that you desire to capture (place the phone down for a second) and take note of all your senses, then close your eyes and just be in it. You will be amazed by how much your memory captures the moment for you, to then return back to at any time, because it has been stored away for a rainy day.
This, by the way, is good practice for our prayer life—mindfulness of the closeness of God begins in this way. As it is written in Sacred Scripture, “Be still and know that I AM God”
Ps 46:10
"Who is my Neighbor? "
Luke 10:25-37
In today’s gospel we hear the familiar story of the Good Samaritan an appropriate parable for our society in present times as it asks each of us Who is my neighbor? The story begins with the lawyer asking a question of Jesus in order to disconcert him. The lawyer already knows the answer to his question so he is hoping to catch Jesus out. Jesus turns the table on him and asks what is written in the law. The lawyers answer forms the core of our faith and is as relevant for us today as it was when these words were first uttered. “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself”
The lawyer trying to justify himself asks who is my neighbor? Today we might ask the same question who is my neighbor? In the parable the person who shows care and compassion for the man attacked by the robbers is not those who we would expect to show care. The priest and the Levite two pillars of Society pass by on the other side not offering help or care to the man lying injured on the road. They simply did not want to get involved . It was the Samaritan man who the priest and the Levite despised who acted with care and compassion and came to the rescue of the injured man. It was the outsider who offered help, it was he who took pity on him.
In St Paul’s letter to the Colossians we find the source of the Samaritan’s compassion which is God’s love of all humanity no matter the color of our skin, creed or political persuasion. In Christ there is no division between races, religions, genders, or political parties. Instead, Christ , encompasses the fulness of creation and brings all together in unity. The Samaritan knows this. Instead of seeing only a Jewish man he sees an injured fellow human being. He sees his neighbor.
Today within our communities it is much easier to see devision rather than similarities. This is because our human mind are primed to sort and identify. The way we do this is by finding that which is different from the rest, which can cause us to be suspicious of the difference. Jesus invites us into a new worldview, one which we look for commonalities and celebrate unity. In this worldview we are all beloved children of God and neighbors.
So who is my neighbor? You are my brothers and sisters are my neighbors.
