"How To Be A Good Samaritan Or A Good Christian"
Luke 10:25-37
In the Gospel, the faith of the lawyer remained only at the level of the head. It was much easier to talk about the meaning of love and faith than to perform actual good deeds. Behind his questions, he knew how to do it, and he also knew that faith would encourage him to love, but his questions step by step were not about how to love but about proving himself and finding authoritative sources for his words. In this way, he will prove that he is a person who knows how to love, and no one will doubt his devotion to faith and love.
Jesus recognized his intention and did not expose or debate him, but used a story to help and guide him from his head to listening to his heart. Jesus reminded him that he was like the priest and the Levite in the story, who, for the sake of their own cleanliness, turned a blind eye to the wounded Samaritan and did not help him. Jesus once again emphasizes that faith without good works is dead.
The Samaritan did not plan how to help people, but it happened naturally. He saw a wounded person who needed timely help, so he extended a helping hand and took good care of him. This is in accordance with Moses' teaching :“something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts, you have only to carry it out. ”
In fact, the scholar of Laws represents us today, who have believed for a long time but still remain at the rational level, lacking action of faith and self-transformation. Today, Jesus kindly reminds us: “the law of the Lord is already in our mouths and in our hearts. We need only to carry it out”.
Hearing God’s voice and knowing the right action and the right time requires thoughtful silent prayer, honest conversations with trusted mentors and friends, and an open heart to listen to the cries of neighbors in need.
Let’s following Jesus’ invitation and “Go and do likewise”.
We are pleased to announce that Christine Chua has been hired as the new Office Manager at Saint Andrew Parish. Christine is a familiar face who has worked part time at the parish including evenings and weekends. She began this past week and will be at the front desk of the office during the week. Stop by to congratulate her or send her a note welcoming her to her new position. We're grateful to have her serve on the staff of Saint Andrew!
St. Andrew Parish is kicking off the Generation to Generation: Answer the Call campaign. Our parish’s participation in the campaign, along with all parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago, will meet needs of our parish and support Catholic ministries in Cook and Lake counties.
Our goal at St. Andrew Parish is to raise $1,400,000 in pledges payable over five (5) years from our parish families. At least fifty percent of the funds from these pledges will go toward the parish needs listed below. The remaining fifty percent will go towards spiritually renewing our church, supporting our priests, and assisting vulnerable communities. When you receive your invitation to participate in this historic effort, please pray and discern a multi-year sacrificial pledge that is right for your family. Today, join us in praying for the success of the Generation to Generation campaign. Our share of the funds will support updating the electrical systems in our church and school as a first step toward installing modern air conditioning in both buildings through a phased approach.
Saint Andrew Parish celebrates the memorial of Christ's Death and Resurrection every day of the week! Parishioners are always invited to come and spend time in worship through our daily Mass. Starting Monday, August 3, 2026, the time for daily Mass held Monday through Friday will change to 8:30am. We hope this change will enable more people to frequent the grace of God's love found in the Eucharist.
