Second Sunday of Ordinary Time
Second Sunday of Ordinary Time
"I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach the ends of the earth." Isaiah 49:6
The parish office is open Monday thru Friday from 8:00am to 7:00pm, on Saturdays from 9:00am to 3:00pm.
The parish office will be closed on Monday, January 19, 20256 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Join us for Mass every weekend at the 4:00pm (vigil) Mass on Saturday, or on Sunday at 9:00am, 11:00am, or 5:00pm.
The following quote comes from St. Athanasius, who lived in the 4th century. He is recognized as one of the Church Fathers:
"By his own wisdom and Word, who is our Lord and Savior Christ, the all-holy Father (whose excellence far exceeds that of any creature), like a skillful steersman guides to safety all creation, regulating and keeping it in being, as he judges right. It is right that creation should exist as he has made it and as we see it happening, because this is his will, which no one would deny. For if the movement of the universe were irrational, and the world rolled on in random fashion, one would be justified in disbelieving what we say. But if the world is founded on reason, wisdom and science, and is filled with orderly beauty, then it must owe its origin and order to none other than the Word of God."
This very articulate passage from the writings of St. Athanasius is a clear indication that the ancient world was not devoid of critical thinking, realistic analysis and considering the world from the scientific mindset. What St. Athanasius is putting forth has been coined in more recent times as Intelligent Design.
If we shift the starting point to the human mind we know with certainty that we have the gift of reason. We enjoy logic and have come very far with math and science, to put it simply. This also points to what St. Athanasius is speaking about, the fact that our mind gifted with reason is finds and discovers patterns, formulas, laws existing in the universe means that life is not random, and it is not by chance. Flip it the other way around, God has gifted Mankind with the mind to recognize patterns, interact with the world in creative ways and shape it.
Lastly, it's important to understand why the "Word" of God is being heavily stressed in St. Athanasius's thought. The Greek word for "Word" is Logos, this term is a very important concept within the Greco-Roman world and Greek philosophy. The Logos first appears in the philosophy of Heraclitus, who understood this term to mean reason as all as have operating as an ordering principle. In John's Gospel the term is applied to Christ. It is the Divine Reason through which the entire cosmos was created. Christ is the ordering principle of everything, from the universe itself to have Intelligent Design down to ordering our interior life within our hearts. This points to then the magnitude of Christ as the Good Shepherd as well.
God creates and also tends to His creation, and most importantly God desires to order our days in His peace.

For more than 60 years, Catholics in the United States have answered the invitation to “share your faith” by supporting pastoral ministries that strengthen the Church in the present day and help it pass on the Gospel to future generations. There will be a second collection at all Masses for this fund next weekend, January 24 & 25, 2026. To donate online visit https://www.givecentral.org/customizable-online-giving/299/event/26879
