Pastoral Letter by Deacon Mark Purdome

"We all know that the world is going to intrude on our desire for reflection, for quiet anticipation, for soothing our frazzled spirits."

I recently discovered the magic of lavender bath bombs.

Long ago, as a housewarming gift for a previous residence, a friend gave Bridget and I a basket of bath products. They've followed us on a couple of moves, but since neither of us are typically "bath people", some of the items sat unused in the cabinet for several years.

Until recently. I was walking down the sidewalk through the leaves and stumbled into a hole. The leaves had completely camouflaged the missing pavement, and when I stepped into the hole, I twisted my back. Not badly, but later that day I decided to look for the heating pad, hoping that it would relieve the soreness. As I rummaged through the cabinet, I came across the bath bomb, and decided that a hot bath would be a wonderful, relaxing way to untwist and unwind.

I hadn't been in a bathtub in years, and neither of us had ever used the tub in our condo, so the first step was to clean out the dust. I ran the hot water, dropped in the fizzy ball, and lowered myself into the hot water. The scent was wonderful, the hot water was relaxing, and I realized that the relaxing peace and quiet wasn't just good for my sore back, but for my frazzled spirit as well.

Until the phone rang.

I don't really get very many phone calls. We tend to communicate with our kids mostly through a group chat because we're in such different time zones. My phone is set up to send most calls automatically to a message service, so I don't even get very many SPAM calls. But now, after 9:00 PM on a Saturday evening, with Bridget out of town, the phone jarred me from my soothing relaxation. After the call went off to voice mail, the text sound dinged. A couple times. Suddenly I decided that someone was really trying to get in contact, and that worried me a bit, so my relaxation ended and I hopped out of the tub.

It turned out that the phone call was SPAM, from someone trying to sell me an appliance warranty, and the text messages were unrelated, just innocuous banter from our kids. All could have been safely ignored, but now the tub was drained, the moment changed, and I was back in the real world.

But I longed to repeat that experience. I even bought lavender bath bombs at the store, thinking that relaxing in the tub was going to be a regular part of my life, but it has only happened one additional time. Yet I vividly remember that experience. The quiet. The peace. Even if it was only for a brief moment.

For me, this is the experience of Advent. We all know that the world is going to intrude on our desire for reflection, for quiet anticipation, for soothing our frazzled spirits. But we still need to find those moments, brief interludes of calm, and cherish them. Remember them. Use them as part of our preparation for the joy of Christ's birth. Even when they are all too brief, interrupted by our responsibilities to our families and friends, if we can pick out just a couple of times when we can settle into ourselves, we will be refreshed, filled with peace and able to share joy with others.

Perhaps that means setting the alarm a few minutes early and actually enjoying that cup of hot coffee. Or skipping the company cafeteria and enjoying a simple sandwich in a remote corner of the office. Each of us will have a different way to steal a few moments. Try to plan some of these interludes in your Advent season. They are important.

I can still smell the lavender in my imagination, and when I do, I can also feel the quiet.

Perhaps consider the Taize Prayer Service on December 13 at 7:00 PM in the church as an opportunity for some moments of reflection.

The Giving Tree Project

Thank you Saint Andrew!  All the ornaments have been handed out!!

Reminder, please purchase two (2) NEW items from a pair of gloves/mittens, socks, a winter hat or scarf.  Spend a maximum of $25.00, no more please.  Each ornament has the child's name, grade and gender on the back.  Once you have finished your shopping, please pack the 2 new winter warmth items (see list of items above) into a zip lock bag (unwrapped) along with the ornament and drop it off at the Rectory or School office during business hours.  The deadline to finish your shopping is next Tuesday, December 12th.  Thank you for helping keep these kids toasty warm this holiday season!

Saint Andrew Parish will hold an Advent Taize Prayer service on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at 7:00pm in the main church. This beautiful form of prayer through simple song and lighting of candles is a wonderful way to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christmas.

We are also pleased to announce that one of the icon paintings used during this prayer service will be a large-work painting of the nativity that Saint Andrew has been gifted. The same artist who created the murals at the Addison Red Line El stop and the painting of Saint Andrew in our school (Steve Musgrrove) has made this contribution to the sacred art of our parish. We're excited to reveal it to the community during this Advent gathering!

Retirement Fund for Religious

Women and men religious have spent their lives serving others in prayer, ministry, education and care for those in need—usually for little or no pay. Today, their religious communities do not have enough retirement savings. As they age, they require essential care and medications. This weekend at all the Masses, a second collection will be taken up on their behalf. Please support them by giving to the Retirement Fund for Religious. Your donation makes a difference for nearly 25,000 senior men and women religious. You can give online to this fund at https://www.givecentral.org/location/299/event/26890

2024 Annual Stewardship Appeal

Our Annual Stewardship Appeal continues... We are asking for every household to consider the year ahead and the commitment of TIME, TALENT, and TREASURE that they can make in  Responding to Love

More than a one-time push for a project involving finances or an urgent need to balance a budget, every parishioner is asked to think long term about the gifts you have and the parish you want to see at Saint Andrew. Through Thanksgiving, this campaign appeal will remain our focus of our parish's conversation as we ask every household to participate. You can find out more and make your commitment at https://standrew.org/give/stewardship-2024

Please complete your household commitment by December 10, 2023.

Update - Renew My Church Covenant

Better Together” Covenant Update

As we continue to imagine ways to implement the covenant between St. Andrew and St. Benedict, we are excited to reach out to the larger parish community. We invite you to pray about bringing your skills and talents forward to enrich our parishes and the community around us. We plan to begin our work in earnest in the new year and anticipate a commitment of just a few hours a month.

Initially, the covenant will focus on a few specific areas:

1. Relationship-building – understanding each other’s needs and strengths as a way to recognize co-responsibility to each other

2. Communication and evangelization – increasing inter-parish communications to more effectively collaborate, share pastoral insights and expand outreach to non-churched individuals

3. Leadership development (volunteerism) – affirming existing leadership, inviting new leadership and ensuring parishioners recognize their gifts of leadership

Team leads have been designated at both St. Andrew and St. Benedict, who would be happy to answer any questions you have. Their contact info is below.

This covenant is critical to the growth of our parishes and an important part of bringing the word of God to all those around us. We hope you will feel drawn to be part of the future vitality of our community!
