First Sunday of Advent
First Sunday of Advent
"Jesus said to his disciples: 'Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.'" Mark 13:33
The Fest of the Immaculate Conception is Friday, December 8, 2023 and is a Holy Day of Obligation. Saint Andrew will celebrate this feast with Mass at 6:30pm in the main church.
Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24 - Masses will be at 3:00pm (Family Mass) with live Nativity and 5:00pm Christmas Eve Mass.
Christmas Day, Monday, December 25 - Masses will be at 9am and 11am.
"Christ also comes in mystery. We should strive to recognize his presence in the concrete events of our lives every day."
A PREPARATION TIME
How we love celebrations! Our lives are punctuated by celebrations. We celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, feasts, promotions, success, and many other things. Last week was the Thanksgiving celebration. It is interesting to notice how seriously we take those celebrations. We prepare for and celebrate them well. Not just the celebrations, we also take great care to prepare for most of our day-to-day activities like work, school, sports, the winter, and summer seasons, etcetera.
What about Christmas? How do we prepare for the celebration of the coming of Christ in history? Advent season offers us the opportunity to do so but how do we go about it? We would probably think about the decorations, songs and music, shopping, and getting our travel plans ready. All these are okay, but if we only pay attention to the pomp and pageantry of the celebration, we miss its significance. The external or outward preparations should be the fruits of the internal—spiritual preparations for Christmas. Advent is a period to be at peace with our God and neighbors. It is a time to continue with our prayer life even as we wait in hope for the Lord’s coming.
Indeed, Christ comes in glory and advent prepares us for this glorious coming. As we prepare to celebrate his coming in history on Christmas day, we equally prepare for his coming in glory by remaining in the state of grace. We ought to pay attention to the words of the Lord in the gospel of today, “Watch and pray”. This is a call to prepare spiritually for his coming. We are urged to pay attention to our lives and discover where we are sleepy. We are to live as if his return were just around the corner. Watch, pray, and do not be found asleep when the Master comes! It is a call to moral and spiritual awakening. The church should not be somnolent. Moral slumber points to a lax conscience that cannot recognize sin and abstain from it, and a relativism that is antithetical to the principles of the gospel. Spiritual drowsiness refers to the inability to feel the presence of God in our lives and the lives of others especially the suffering and the needy.
In this season of preparation for celebrating his coming in history and awaiting his coming in glory, we live as people of hope in our joyful expectations. The hope to celebrate Christmas with family, friends, and loved ones is a great hope. There is another hope that surpasses all hope—that Jesus is coming in glory, and we shall meet him. That is the climax of all joyful expectation. The hope of all hope because when he comes and we meet him, our joy will be complete and there will be nothing greater than this encounter. But Jesus comes when we do not know. We have every day of our lives to prepare to receive him. Advent is only a special liturgical period the church sets aside for us to intensify this preparation for his glorious coming even as we commemorate his coming in history. The beautiful lines by Tr E. Caswall help get us spiritually alert, in wait for Christ’s coming: “Hear the herald voice resounding: Christ is near, it seems to say, cast away the dreams of darkness, welcome Christ, the light of day.” This song invites us to cast away the plans, dreams, ideas, thoughts, and acts of sin and evil. We can only welcome Christ with a pure, peaceful, loving, and faithful heart.
Lastly, Christ also comes in mystery. We should strive to recognize his presence in the concrete events of our lives every day. He is present in the scriptures and sacraments. He is present in the needy and suffering. Recognizing him in all these aspects is responding well to the advent’s call for watchfulness. The signs of his presence are here with us, though in mystery. We are called to be alert. We need to have it reaffirmed that God is present and acting in those personal and social apocalypses of our lives. As we plan to get our items and gifts for Christmas, we need to remember to get some for the sick, poor, homeless, hungry, and suffering. Again, spiritual watchfulness includes a life of personal prayer and praying with our loved ones. Let us join the universal church in praying: Come Lord Jesus!
The patron saint of the United States is the Immaculate Conception of Mary which the Church celebrates this year on Friday, December 8, 2023. In union with the whole Church, we will hold Mass at 6:30pm in the main church in keeping with this solemnity. Please join us on this Holy Day of Obligation as we pray for our nation and commit ourselves to the intercession of Mary who was born from free of sin.
The Giving Trees in the back of Church and in the School are stocked with ornaments! During the next two weeks, there will be volunteers at school drop off and pick up handing out ornaments as well. Please select an ornament or ornaments (families can take more than one if they choose) and purchase two (2) NEW items from a pair of gloves/mittens, socks, a winter hat or scarf. Spend a maximum of $25.00, no more please. Each ornament has the child's name, grade and gender on the back. Once you have finished your shopping, please pack the 2 new winter warmth items into a zip lock bag (unwrapped) along with the ornament and drop it off at the Rectory or School office. The deadline to finish your shopping is Tuesday, December 12th. Thank you for helping keep these kids toasty warm this holiday season!
Saint Andrew Parish will hold an Advent Taize Prayer service on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at 7:00pm in the main church. This beautiful form of prayer through simple song and lighting of candles is a wonderful way to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christmas.
We are also pleased to announce that one of the icon paintings used during this prayer service will be a large-work painting of the nativity that Saint Andrew has been gifted. The same artist who created the murals at the Addison Red Line El stop and the painting of Saint Andrew in our school (Steve Musgrave) has made this contribution to the sacred art of our parish. We're excited to reveal it to the community during this Advent gathering!

Women and men religious have spent their lives serving others in prayer, ministry, education and care for those in need—usually for little or no pay. Today, their religious communities do not have enough retirement savings. As they age, they require essential care and medications. Next weekend at all the Masses, a second collection will be taken up on their behalf. Please support them by giving to the Retirement Fund for Religious. Your donation makes a difference for nearly 25,000 senior men and women religious. You can give online to this fund at https://www.givecentral.org/location/299/event/26890

Our Annual Stewardship Appeal continues... We are asking for every household to consider the year ahead and the commitment of TIME, TALENT, and TREASURE that they can make in Responding to Love.
More than a one-time push for a project involving finances or an urgent need to balance a budget, every parishioner is asked to think long term about the gifts you have and the parish you want to see at Saint Andrew. Through Thanksgiving, this campaign appeal will remain our focus of our parish's conversation as we ask every household to participate. You can find out more and make your commitment at https://standrew.org/give/stewardship-2024
Please complete your household commitment by December 10, 2023.
Better Together” Covenant Update
As we continue to imagine ways to implement the covenant between St. Andrew and St. Benedict, we are excited to reach out to the larger parish community. We invite you to pray about bringing your skills and talents forward to enrich our parishes and the community around us. We plan to begin our work in earnest in the new year and anticipate a commitment of just a few hours a month.
Initially, the covenant will focus on a few specific areas:
1. Relationship-building – understanding each other’s needs and strengths as a way to recognize co-responsibility to each other
2. Communication and evangelization – increasing inter-parish communications to more effectively collaborate, share pastoral insights and expand outreach to non-churched individuals
3. Leadership development (volunteerism) – affirming existing leadership, inviting new leadership and ensuring parishioners recognize their gifts of leadership
Team leads have been designated at both St. Andrew and St. Benedict, who would be happy to answer any questions you have. Their contact info is below.
