At this time of the year, one of the great sights across the countryside is to see the fields of wheat and barley turning golden. But if you talk to any farmer, they’ll tell you that alongside every good crop there are always weeds. No matter how hard you work, they seem to find a way in. I remember once asking a farmer why he did not pull the weeds out an an early stage and his response was “I could spend my days pulling out the weeds and never get time to enjoy the crop.” There is a lot of wisdom in what he said.

In our Gospel today the servants want to pull out the weeds immediately. But the owner says, “Leave them until the harvest.” He recognized that in trying to pull out the weeds, the wheat could also be destroyed. If we compare the field of wheat to our own lives, then we will recognize the truth that there are wheat and weeds growing in all of us. We all have our good days and bad days. We can be patient one moment and impatient another, generous one day and selfish the following day.  Thankfully, the Lord deals with us gently and patiently. 

Perhaps the greatest temptation is to spend our time worrying about the weeds in someone else’s field instead of tending our own. Jesus reminds us today that our first task is to let God cultivate our hearts. If we stay close to him in prayer, in the Eucharist, and in simple acts of kindness, the wheat will gradually grow stronger than the weeds. So today, let us thank God for His patience with us. He never gives up on us even when we give up on ourselves. And let us ask for the grace to be just as patient with others, trusting that the Lord who began His good work in each of us will bring it to completion in His own good time.
