On the 7th of September, I celebrate the 29th anniversary of my ordination. As I reflect over these years of priesthood,  I am grateful to God for his call, and to my parents, family and friends for their constant love and support down through the years. As I contemplate all that I have experienced during those 29 years of service in China, Ireland and now in the United States, I realize that the mission entrusted to me is really quite simple: Love of God and service of His  people. Priesthood is a gift from God and through it my life has been enriched and blessed.

During my two and a half years serving in St. Andrew 's Parish, I have encountered many ordinary, yet extraordinary, people whose faith and commitment to the Church has inspired me and helped me to grow in my own faith journey. Visiting the sick and elderly in their homes and nursing homes brings me great joy. Providing a listening ear to someone who is troubled is an act of kindness and part of my ministry. 

I recall with gratitude the day a parishioner called upon me in the hope that I would visit her brother who had suffered a stroke and was also battling cancer.  When I first met this man, he was quite reserved and hesitant to talk.  However, after a couple of visits, he opened up and we made a close spiritual connection.  Unfortunately, after a few months, he was hospitalized.  But I was able to visit him to administer the Sacrament of the Sick just before he passed. I felt privileged to meet this man and to accompany him in the final months of his life.

Priesthood and leadership are connected through service. Over the years, I have developed a leadership style that I believe provides others with insight into Christ’s teaching  to “Love God and your neighbor.”  In my role as the presider over the St.Andrew’s Young Adult Group, I have been honored to accompany them as they explore their faith and commitment to the Church.

At the heart of priesthood is the gift of the Eucharist from where I draw my strength and make Christ present to His people. Recently, while on a short break, I met an old priest who many years ago served in St. Andrew's and what he said to me has stayed with me. "Fr. Melchior, your calling is to love and serve the people entrusted to your care and in doing so you are serving God and living your priesthood." As I celebrate my priestly anniversary, I ask for your prayers that my priesthood will continue to be of service to God and my neighbor.  With thanks and gratitude. Fr. Melchior
