Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
"For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be." Luke 12:34
The parish office is currently keeping summer hours. The new office schedule will be as follows. The office will be opened from Monday thru Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm, on Saturdays from 9:00am to 3:00pm and on Sundays from 9:00am to noon.
Join us for Mass every weekend at the 4:00pm (vigil) Mass on Saturday, or on Sunday at 9:00am, 11:00am, or 5:00pm.
I am away this weekend in Nashville, Tennessee for the priest ordination of a good friend of mine. It is one of the great joys of the priesthood to see a friend enter into the sacred office. I've known my friend and his family for a long time, which naturally adds to the joy of being there to welcome him into the priestly fraternity of Our Lord. It is important to prayer for vocations. The Lord has never stopped inviting men to be configured to His Priesthood, yet sadly many are discouraged from saying "yes" to Our Lord. If you know of a young man or perhaps your relative that might be called to the priesthood, encourage him. Please keep my friend in your prayers and be assured of my continued prayers for you while I'm away.
" Be Alert, Because You Do Not Know The Time or Hour"
Luke 12:32-48
The Church calendar like our yearly Calendar has four seasons consisting of Advent, Lent, Easter and Ordinary Time. Each season has a particular focus. Advent focuses on preparation for the Birth of Christ, Lent prepares us for repentance and Easter celebrates the resurrection of Christ our Savior. Ordinary Time does not offer specific spiritual directions or practices like other seasons. This requires us to discern for ourselves which prayers, spiritual practices, and acts of mercy will best strengthen our relationship with God.
Without clear spiritual direction, many of us, including myself, would be at a loss as to how to celebrate this season. Fortunately, in today’s Gospel, Jesus gives us concrete a practical guide for our spiritual growth. Jesus’ focuses on preparation, faithfulness and readiness, urging his followers to prepare for his return and to manage what they have received. This passage emphasizes the urgency and importance of being vigilant and diligent disciples, always ready for action. “See that you are dressed for action and have your lamps lit. For happy are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes.”
Jesus tells the story of the servant who is ready for his masters return even if this is in the middle of the night. What this tells us is that we too have to be prepared because none of us knows the time or hour when He will come to us. It teaches us that every moment is a crucial time for faithful discipleship because His Second Coming could come at any time. It also reminds us that our true treasure is a relationship with God built on love and service of our brothers and sisters. Our lives are not made secure by what we own but by how we love God and our neighbor.
In this season of Ordinary Time it is good to reflect and ask ourselves if our hearts are guided by Jesus and His teachings. For us to recommit ourselves to the vigilance of Advent, the thankfulness of Christmas, the penitence of Lent, and the joy of Easter. These themes and attitudes are not limited to these seasons but permeate the entire year and our entire journey with Christ. Combined with Jesus’ reminders and teachings today let us renew our commitment to Him so that when He comes again He will find us ready. For this grace let us pray.
Friday, August 15, 2025 is the Solemnity of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary. Given the prominence of the feast in our Catholic tradition, we will have Mass both at 9:00am and 6:30pm.
Mary is the most important intercessor for us for God and this solemnity recalls that her witness of holiness was so absolute that when she reached the end of her life, her whole self, body and soul, was brought into the heavenly abode. Mary our Mother, pray for us and show us the way to be with you and God forever!
