Pastoral Letter by Deacon Mark Purdome
"When you fully enter into a ritual, it helps provide a sense of purpose in your life."
Ritual. As Catholics, we're very familiar with ritual, because so many of the ways that we worship are encompassed in rituals. Certainly, Mass is a ritual, but so are the other sacraments and even devotional practices like praying the rosary. Easter is filled with rituals within rituals, as we witnessed during the Easter Triduum.
Our lives are filled with other rituals as well. We're rapidly approaching the end of the school year, and we'll have graduation and grade promotion rituals. When my kids were little, we had a nighttime "go to bed" ritual, including a song that we invented (the "night night parade"). Sports, family dinners, birthdays - all of these special events in our lives are filled with rituals.
I've recently become more aware of ritual because I attended two funerals that were very different from each other and from the Catholic tradition. Both were beautiful ways to honor the deceased, but both were also a bit outside my comfort zone. They left me pondering the importance of ritual in our daily lives, and how many of them are taken for granted, falling into things we simply do - habits - rather than conscious actions.
The distinction between habit and ritual is important. A habit is something you do without thinking, like brushing your teeth or tying your shoes. Automated, routine, mindless. On the other hand, a ritual is something that you do mindfully. Sociologist Robert Wuthnow writes that rituals are any actions or events that have symbolic meaning beyond their instrumental value, so they engage our mind. A ritual is a celebration that involves our emotions and our full attention, rather than mindless repetition.
Give some thought to how to stay fully engaged in the rituals of life. Whether it is a weeknight dinner or worshipping God, being mindful of our rituals increases our appreciation of life. They turn the ordinary into a celebration, one that reminds us of the things we have in common, and brings us closer together as a community.
When you fully enter into a ritual, it helps provide a sense of purpose in your life.
-Deacon Mark
