According to a recent Pew Research Center Study (link here), 91% of teens go online from a mobile device. 76% of teens use social networking sites from their phones. Internet use from a mobile device and social networking is a major part of daily life of tween and teenage students.
According to a recent Common Sense Media study, 13 to 18 year olds use an average of 9 hours of media daily, not including for school or homework. Eight to 12 year olds spend an average of 6 hours daily.

How do we keep them safe?
Again, it is all about education! Make learning how to be safe online, using a computer or a mobile device, fun with some of the resources shown below.
NSTeens.org - This site offers videos, games, quizzes, and comics to help students learn about safe social media use as well as all-around good internet behavior.
In one game, Tad's Profile Panic, students are tasked with collecting sensitive information, and avoiding those that wish to steal the information. It is a great way to start a conversation about what kinds of information should and should not be shared online.
The Office of the Children's eSafety Commissioner (Australia) - Although it seems odd to look to Australia for Digital Citizenship resources, the Office of the Children's eSafety Commissioner has some great resources. Games, videos, and quizzes help teach students about online safety.
