We have been learning how to tell really good stories. We found out about the people in stories (called characters), where stories happen (the setting), and what happens in the story (the plot). It's like being a detective, but for stories!
We planned our own stories too. We started with nursery rhymes like "Jack and Jill" or "Mary Had a Little Lamb," then we made up our own new adventures.
Our class is full of super creative artists! We made really cool abstract self-portraits that show who we are in a special way. Abstract art means we used colors, shapes, and lines to show our feelings and personalities instead of making pictures that look exactly like us.
Each portrait is totally unique - just like each one of us! Some kids used bright, happy colors like yellow and orange. Others picked calm colors like blue and purple. You can see all our awesome artwork hanging up in our classroom like we have our very own art museum.
We're so proud of our portraits because they show how creative and talented our whole class is.
The Market Fresh team came to visit our Grade 1/2 classes to teach us all about eating healthy foods, especially fruits and vegetables. It was so exciting!
We got to taste lots of different fresh fruits and veggies - some we had never tried before! The best part was learning how all our food gets from the big Melbourne Market to the shops where our families buy groceries. It was like following our food on a special journey!
Our visitors taught us something really cool - fruits and vegetables have special seasons when they taste the very best. Even though we can buy kiwi fruit all year long at the store, they actually taste much sweeter and yummier from March to July because that's their special season.
We learned that eating fruits and vegetables helps us grow strong and healthy. Now we know more about where our food comes from and when it tastes its absolute best.
We've been learning about where our water comes from, and the most exciting part was studying the water cycle! We made our very own water cycle experiments that you can see hanging in our classroom.
First, we drew pictures of the water cycle on clear plastic bags and wrote labels for each part. Then Carla helped us put water in our bags to show how it all works. Over time we can watch the water change right before our eyes!
Here's what happens in our bags: The water starts as a lake or ocean (that's our body of water). When it gets warm, it turns into invisible water vapor that goes up into the air - that's called evaporation. Then the water vapor cools down and turns back into tiny water drops on the plastic - that's condensation. Finally, when there are enough water drops, they fall down like rain - that's precipitation!
It's like having our own little rainstorm in a bag! We love checking on our experiments every day to see the water cycle happening over and over again. Now we understand how the rain that falls on us started as water in rivers, lakes, and oceans!
