THIS SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT IS FOR STUDENTS ENTERING FIFTH GRADE IN SEPTEMBER 2023

THE HOMEWORK MACHINE by Dan Gutman
ONE CRAZY SUMMER by Rita Williams-Garcia
Complete the following 2 activities:
Friendly Letter
Character Wanted Poster
Each child should arrive on the first day of school with 2 projects: 1 friendly letter and 1 character wanted poster. You may choose which activity you want to do for which book.
FRIENDLY LETTER
Write a letter to me using the following format. Your letter may be handwritten or computer-generated. (Please know I am a huge fan of following directions.)
Dear Mrs. Werner,
1st paragraph- tell me about the book you read. This paragraph should include the title and author of the book. You may write a summary of the book or base your response on one of the following leads:
The setting of the story was important because...
The most exciting part of the book was ... I think the author wrote this book to ...
2nd paragraph- tell me how you connected with the book. You may use the following leads to help you get started:
This book reminds me of another book I read...
If I were (character's name), I would...
I am like or different from (character)...
As compared to other books (by this author, on the same topic)...
3rd paragraph-Tell me who you are as a reader. How do you feel about reading? What types of books interest you?

WANTED POSTER
For this project, you will create a WANTED poster for a character in the book that you chose to read.
DIRECTIONS:
choose a main character from your book.
cut a piece of standard poster board in half. (no foam boards)
include the word WANTED in large bold lettering.
draw a large detailed picture of your "Wanted" character.
* make sure your drawing takes up most of your poster.
* be sure to color the illustration completely and neatly.
below the illustration include the following information.
* name of character * last seen
* height * wanted for
* weight * reward amount
* hair color * contact person (your name)
* eye color * any other info you feel is necessary
* distinguishing features ( scars, birthmarks, etc)
Don't forget to include the TITLE and Author.
