Resources

Google translate is not a reliable source for translation. It is good for a word here and there, but even then it is not the best option. Below are some links to other Latin teachers who have created resources for Latin students. There is also an online dictionary I like to use.

  • Legonium - Magister Anthony uses Legos to teach Latin.

  • Magister Craft - Magister Craft uses, you guessed it! - Minecraft to teach different culture topics using spoken Latin! The videos are captioned in English, sometimes Latin, or both!

  • Online Dictionary - Latin Lexicon is a good dictionary when you don't have a printed copy on hand. Caveat: searching for English to Latin with this dictionary can be overwhelming. If you have an Apple device, look for the app "Latin Words."

  • Scorpio Martianus - Scorpio Martianus AKA "Bald Guy" posts many videos ranging from pronunciation help to well known songs in Latin (many are in the playlist below).

  • Songs in Latin - Magistra Buckler has put together a playlist of songs in Latin. Take a listen to see what songs you know, but can now listen to in Latin!

Latin Podcast

There are a few Latin podcasts that talk about anything. It helps get used to hearing the language and as you become more acquainted with the language, it will be easier to understand.

Quid es tu? - Two teachers play a round of 20 questions trying to figure out the vocabulary word. Transcripts are available for this podcast so that you can read as you listen.

Quomodo Dicitur? - A group of three friends speak Latin about whatever comes to mind. Magistra was in the audience of their episode 133: Novi Eboraci apud Conventum Paideia LLiNYC. If you listen closely you can hear her say "Numerate!"

Legio XIII - A podcast of I believe mostly history, but other things in Latin. The hosts of this podcast are Magister Craft et L. Amadeus from Scorpio Martianus.

Latin Novellas

The best way to improve your Latin is through books that are at your level. Below Magistra has posted two things to help with this task. One is a link to a Youtube playlist and the second a slideshow of Latin books and their appropriate level.

Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata Youtube Playlist - Scorpio Martianus has again given us a beautiful resource. He records readings of the capitula from the book, with the pages visible as you listen. LLPSI is a beautiful book that is completely in Latin, but slowly and naturally progresses your acquisition with the language.

Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata PDF - By the powers that be, someone put the amazing Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata in a PDF for public use. Magistra would recommend listening to the recordings done by Scorpio Martianus while reading the PDF.

Level Appropriate Books - Magister Yates at Massaponax High School in Spotsylvania County put together this slide of books and their appropriate level. The pictures link to a site to purchase the books, but not always to the cheapest option, so your own search is welcome.
