Science & Engineering

SCIENCE OVERVIEW:

Elementary Science MISSION Statement

All of our students will realize the ongoing relevance of science in their everyday lives and become scientifically literate.

Elementary Science VISION Statement

Students, staff, and community design and implement a learning organization that provides inquiry- based experiences allowing students to construct knowledge and skills to investigate the natural world by acting, thinking, and communicating like scientists.

Our Beliefs

With teachers using the Lewisville ISD elementary science curriculum, all students will:

  • develop abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry as prescribed by Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

  • use age-appropriate tools and models.

  • use reading and information as well as data and critical thinking to make decisions.

  • work cooperatively to problem-solve and safely investigate scientific phenomena.

  • communicate effectively through writing, listening, and speaking.

  • use technology to enhance learning.

  • be exposed to current scientific research and developments.

  • establish a scientific knowledge base of the natural world.

  • use science knowledge, understanding, and skills appropriately in making personal decisions, interacting in the community, and increasing economic productivity throughout their careers.

1st 9 weeks:

Students will understand that…

  • Scientists demonstrate safe practices when using the process of inquiry to investigate the natural world while using tools, thinking critically and sharing their understanding.

  • matter has physical properties that help to determine how it is classified, changed and used.

  • matter has measurable properties which determines how matter is classified, used, and changed.

  • investigate and draw conclusions about force, motion, and energy in order to describe these relationships in everyday life.

  • the uses of energy, including mechanical, light, thermal, electrical, and sound energy

  • light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object and is reflected or travels through one medium to another and is refracted.
