Parental Involvement
Be a volunteer! Be a judge! Be a chaperone!
Volunteer- All volunteers MUST complete the background check information for Lewisville. That can be completed here. Parents can provide transportation for their students when a bus is not available, meals for tournaments, and help with fundraising.
Judging- Debate offers parents a unique opportunity for involvement in a school activity. Many activities only allow parents to be observers, but in debate, parents have the chance to become active participants by serving as judges. Judges do not need to have special expertise; they just need to be good listeners and to declare who offered them the best argument. As schools are required to supply a certain amount of judges or pay a tournament fee, in many debate programs, parents form the backbone of the judging pool. Parent Judging is a vital part of our Debate program. When including judging expenses, Booster Club fees only cover about 2 tournaments per student and school funds would be depleted after the first tournament. Parent Judges are what make it possible for us to compete in the tournaments we have throughout the year! If you are interested in judging at tournaments, please complete this form. You can also find some helpful resources for new judges HERE.
Chaperone- Parents may be required to provide transportation and chaperone Saturdays, depending on tournament numbers. Parents may choose to get together and share transportation or chaperone duties; however, school transportation and chaperones will not be provided on Saturday. On the rare occasion we take overnight trips, we may require parent chaperones in order for these trips to be possible. These include trips to the State or National tournament and when able, travel to Boston for the international tournament held at Harvard University.
