McKamy Athletic Mission Statement
McKamy Middle School Athletics is a developmental program that promotes the academic, physical, psychological, and social growth of the student-athlete.
GENERAL INFORMATION
McKamy Middle School offers many different sports for students/athletes. Student/athletes have the opportunity to participate in football, basketball, cross country, track, and soccer.
Due to the high number of students wanting to participate in Athletics, tryouts and cuts will be necessary for certain sports, which include basketball, and soccer. Cross Country, football and track are sports that do not have cuts. Try-out sessions will be announced by the coaching staff and will be held before/after school and during the athletic period. Individuals wishing to try out for a team will be required to attend these sessions. Selections will be made by the coaching staff based on attendance, skill, effort, and attitude. Students that do not make the team selections will receive feedback on what they can do to improve and will participate in McKamy's Skill Development and Conditioning Program.
McKamy's Skill Development and Conditioning Program is to prepare students for future high school athletic competition and develop individual skills. Training will consist of activities focusing on speed, strength, stamina, flexibility, coordination, agility, teamwork, confidence, and pride. In addition, specific sport skills training will be implemented when deemed appropriate by the staff.
All students enrolled in athletics will earn grades based on individual levels of fitness and daily participation, which includes appropriate dress, attitude, and effort. Parents and participants should keep in mind this is an upper level class with high expectations in regards to participation, responsibility, cooperation, and improvement. Students will be expected to workout each day.
PARTICIPATION
Membership in McKamy Athletics is a privilege and students will be held to a high level of expectations. Participants are required to dress out daily in the required uniform and exert their best effort in all activities. Failure to do so may result in removal from athletics, grade reduction, restricted playing time, or disciplinary action as deemed necessary by the coaching staff.
As a member of any McKamy team, Athletes are expected to attend all practices and games as required by the coaching staff. Failure to do so may result in reduced playing time or removal from the team. Some situations may require the athlete to make up any missed time before they play in the next game. School involved extracurricular activities, illness, family emergencies and etc... of course does exempt athletes from such measures. Please notify the head coach of that sport if such a situation arises.
Athletes are expected to arrive to class, practice, and games on time. Failure to do so will result in reduced playing time or other action deemed appropriate by the coaching staff. If an athlete misses a contest for club/select sports, they will sit out the next LISD contest. Coaches will be flexible with practices, but all members are expected to be at every contest. This applies specifically to "cut sports", such as basketball and soccer. When an individual is selected for a team the student/athlete must make a commitment to attend all practices and contests.
If, for any reason a student is not able to participate due to an injury or illness, the parent should write a note or email the designated coach explaining the situation. Modifications will be made accordingly. A doctor’s permit is required if the condition persists longer than three consecutive days.
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY
Students who participate on any McKamy team are required to pass all classes at the end of the first six weeks of the school year and again at the end of each nine-week grading period. If an athlete fails a class (a grade below 70) he will be deemed ineligible to play in any game/competition. During this time student athletes are expected to participate in all practices but can not participate in any games. At the end of the three-week period, the student/athlete must be passing ALL SUBJECTS to regain eligibility. The coaching staff, in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the University Interscholastic League, will determine specific day(s)/dates for eligibility.
If a student requires tutoring services, they should communicate with the coaching staff their needs and arrange a suitable time to attend these sessions with the appropriate teacher. Grades always come first.
DRESS
All athletes must dress out in the required uniform and can be ordered through McKamy Flip Dog page. Each athlete is required to purchase the athletic wear, including sweats. When ordering, Flip Dog will place the athlete's last name or initials on each piece of clothing for identification purposes. Names may only be placed on the back of the t-shirt and sweatshirt. The front leg of shorts and sweatpants will have initials. Nicknames are NOT allowed. This dress is mandatory for those students enrolled in the athletic class.
Athletes are required to wear appropriate shoes with socks. This includes running shoes for track, soccer, court shoes for basketball.
GROOMING
Proper attire and grooming are essential for the safety of all participants in sporting activities. All types of jewelry are prohibited and will not be allowed. This includes stud earrings. Hair must be placed up and away from the participant’s face with non-metallic or non-plastic bands. Fingernails must not extend in length past the end of the fingers.
BEHAVIOR
McKamy athletes will be held to a high degree of appropriate behavior on the court, field, and classroom. The actions of our athletes reflect directly on the integrity and pride of McKamy Athletics. Students are expected to follow all rules and guidelines as set forth by the McKamy Student Code of Conduct. Athletes assigned to I.S.S. for violation of the code will not be allowed to participate in game competitions during that time.
SECURITY
Each student enrolled in the athletic class will have a locker. The student is required to lock all belongings in their locker. If a problem arises, the student should notify a member of the coaching staff. Please remember the following:
· Do not share your combination with anyone
· Do not share lockers
· Only use your assigned locker
· Keep your locker locked at all times
· Follow locker room rules as indicated by the coaching staff
Failure to do the above could result in damage, theft, or loss of privileges. Students are expected to financially reimburse McKamy Middle School for missing locks, uniforms, or damaged lockers.
TRANSPORTATION
Parents are responsible for transporting athletes to and from all practices. Students should be picked up at the designated time. Parents are also responsible for picking up their child after each athletic contest and practice. Lewisville Independent School District provides bus transportation to all away games. Students are required to ride the bus with the team to and from these games. Parents may pick their child up at away sites if a "Transportation Release" form has been signed and turned in for that sport. Athletes will not be allowed to ride home with anyone other than their parent. Failure to follow this rule may result in disciplinary action from a coach and/or school administration.
Placement of Athletics on a Team
The McKamy coaching staff will have the discretion to what skill level, DI, DII, or DIII an athlete will be playing on for a particular sport.. An athlete may be moved up or down during the season if the coaching staff feels he or she needs to be moved to a different level, depending on the athlete’s progress, or if UIL eligibility rules create a situation where players need to be moved. We will let the athletes choose what position they want try out for, but the coaches will have the discretion to move the athlete to a position where they feel he or she can help the team more or to a position the athlete can be more successful at for that particular sport.
Parent/Coach Relationship
Appropriate concerns to discuss with a coach:
1. What your child needs to do to improve.
2. Concerns about your child’s behavior.
Coaches make decisions based on what they believe is the best interest of all students participating.
Issues which are NOT appropriate for discussion with coaches:
1. How much playing time an athlete is getting.
2. Team strategy.
3. Play calling.
4. Any situation that deals with other student-athletes.
To set up a conference with a coach, this should procedure should be followed:
1. Email the coach to set up an appropriate time.
2. Think about what you expect to accomplish as a result of the meeting.
3. Stick to discussing the facts, as you understand them.
4. Give yourself 24 hours to process prior to scheduling a conference.
Please follow the proper Chain of Command to resolve any issues of concerns:
1. Specific Sports Head Coach
2. McKamy Athletic Coordinator: Coach Saye
3. Principal: Mrs. Tufnell
4. High School Athletic Coordinator: Coach Basil
5. LISD Middle School Athletic Coordinator: Cole Ford
6. LISD Athletic Director: Christie Liles
SPORTS
All athletes must have all "Required Athletic Paperwork" completed and turned in to Coach Saye by the end of the first day of school. Transfer/new to our district athletes will have until the end of the first week to have all completed.
Football
There are no cuts in football. Each athlete who chooses to play will be placed on a team. Generally, we have three football teams, which include a DI team, DII team, and DIII team. Size and athletic ability do play a role in determining what level an athlete is placed on for football teams. McKamy will furnish all protective equipment and game and practice uniforms. If an athlete wants to provide his own protective equipment, the parent must complete and turn in a "Use of Personal" equipment form. A coach will then inspect the equipment for proper fit and condition. Eighth-grade practices are held in the morning before school and first period. Seventh grade practices are in the afternoon during eighth period and after school. Practice schedules will be updated and posted weekly on McKamy Boy's Athletic website.
Basketball
There will be three teams in 7th grade and two teams in the 8th grade. Tryouts are open to all students in athletics. Eighth grade practices will be held before school and during first period athletics. Seventh grade practices will be held during the athletic period and after school. As mentioned above, basketball is a "Try Out" sport and cuts will be made. A “Tryout Evaluation/Grade Sheet” will be posted on our website prior to the tryout period.
Cross Country
Cross Country is open to all athletes. No cuts are made, but a qualifying time might be imposed to qualify for meets. Practices will be held before school for 8th grade and after school for 7th grade. Athletes who make the basketball team and wish to run cross country may do so, but attendance to practice is required. 8th grade basketball players will attend after school cross country workouts, while 7th grade basketball players will attend morning cross country workouts.
Track and Field
Track and field is open to all athletes. Practices vary based on which field or running event the athletes tries out for. Practice schedules will be updated and posted weekly on McKamy Boy's Athletic website. Criteria for making an event will be set by the individual coach of that event.
Soccer
Soccer is open to all Athletes. Soccer is a "Try Out" sport and cuts will be made. Practice schedules will be updated and posted weekly on McKamy Boy's Athletic website. There will be one seventh grade team and one eighth grade team. A “Tryout Evaluation/Grade Sheet” will be posted on our website prior to the tryout period.
Skill Development
Skill Development is our opportunity to improve an athlete’s overall performance. If an athlete is not participating in a sport then he will follow the Skill Development Workout schedule. The workout schedule will be updated and posted weekly on McKamy Boy’s Athletic website. Skill Development workouts will be before school and carry over into first period for 8th grade and during 8th period carrying over to after school for 7th grade.
