While Flower Mound High has always had a student art show, the Art Open didn't make it's official debut until 2013.
For many years, the student art show was held annually during the month of May. It was the last hurrah for the senior class, and an encompassing view of the work produced throughout the school year. It was good, but not great. We longed for a show that was more than a "look back" at the school year.
In May of 2013, the FMHS Art Show was rebranded as the FMHS Art Open, and that was just the beginning. The following school year, the show itself was moved from May to January. With positive feedback from the student body and staff, it has since become a mid-year tradition.
The Art Open also serves as the launching pad to our busy show season. Works from the show are then selected to for upcoming shows/competitions, in which we participate both regionally and nationally. Students have expressed that they like the show's timing, due to being able to see what is made within our campus and then comparing that to what is going on elsewhere.
Of course, we didn't forget about our seniors. By moving our show midyear, the senior class now have their own year end exhibit, the AP/Senior Sign-Off, celebrating the graduating class and the students of our AP Art program.
