5th Grade Parents, Teachers, & Students,
Here is your one stop to get registered for the upcoming school year! It is very important that parents & students view this website together & go through all of the information. Be sure to complete all four steps. Both the electronic Course Request Google Form & Skyward Course Input are due by Wednesday, January 21st. After this date, class selections will be limited & Skyward Course Selections will be locked.

Put your course selections in Skyward to match what you entered into the Google Form.
You're done! Wait for course verification instructions in April 2026. Schedules will not be released until August 2026.

Please review the information in STEP 1 about the academic courses and specialized programs offered in middle school.
ALL STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE FOLLOWING COURSES IN THEIR SCHEDULE:
1 English Language Arts class
1 Math class
1 Science class
1 Social Studies class
1 Physical Education class
1 Strategies for Success
2 Elective classes *at least one fine arts class
8 COURSES TOTAL

Step 1
Middle School Academic Planning Guide (Course Descriptions can be found here)
ALL STUDENTS will have:
1 English Language Arts classes
1 Math class
1 Science class
1 Social Studies class
1 Physical Education class
Decide on which class in each area you would like to take.
English/Language Arts On-Level
Honors English/Language Arts
Gifted/Talented English/Language Arts (LEAP)
*must be identified as a GT student to enroll
Math 6 On-Level
Honors Math 6 (7th Grade Math Curriculum)
*Recent legislation beginning in the 2024-2025 school year will require that students scoring in the top 40% on the Math 5 STAAR be automatically enrolled in our HONORS Math 6 course. Parents may opt their students out of this requirement. See your campus counselor for opt-out information.

All 6th grade students will take a PE course.
If you are interested in External PE, more information can be found HERE. Please complete the application ASAP. Applications not completed (3 parts: application, fee, coaches information) before the end of the 26-27 school year will not be processed until after orientation. The External PE office is closed during the summer.)
Strategies for Success
All 6th grade students will take Strategies for Success, the Counselors will add this course to their Skyward Course Requests. You do not need to add this course.
Physical Education Options
All 6th grade students are required to take a Physical Education class. There are 2 options: PE or Pre-Athletics.
***External PE is by application and approval only. If you are planning on applying, please have your child choose PE or Pre-Athletics. Counselors will place students in External PE once we receive the approval list from the External PE department.
Decide on your first, and second requested elective choice.
Select 3 other elective choices you are interested in.
Rank your elective choices from 1 to 6 (one being the elective that you are most interested in.)
Please make sure ALL 6 of your elective selections (3 main, 3 alternate) are for DIFFERENT electives. No elective selection should be listed more than once. We don't want to have to make elective selections for you.
The Downing Counseling team does not guarantee placement in any elective.
Placement into electives is NOT "first come, first serve". Take your time deciding and make selections by JANUARY 21.

We suggest that the form is filled out only after consultation and after all questions are answered. THERE IS NO ADVANTAGE TO FILLING OUT THIS FORM OUT EARLY- DUE JANUARY 21st. Course selections are NOT first come, first serve. We do not guarantee elective requests. If you fill out this form and there is a mistake entered, fill the form out again. The last entry will be the one that is saved.

To register for classes you will need to use your student username and password. You cannot log in with your parent login information to make the course selections. You will have 7 classes selected. We will add "Strategies for Success" for you.
*THERE IS NO "SAVE" OR "SUBMIT" BUTTON ON SKYWARD. IT AUTOMATICALLY SAVES REQUESTS.

Downing Orientation 2026 TBA
We will have a DMS Orientation in late summer about a week before the start of school. We will communication through social media, email, and on our school website! Stay tuned!
