Service learning is an integral piece of the education provided at Harker, as we aim to develop leaders of virtue, compassion, and respect for those around us and the environment we inhabit. The Community Service Program helps to guide students through their experiences with service by providing organized service opportunities throughout the year, helping students to discover their areas of focus within service, and encouraging service leadership in all its forms.

How many hours are needed to meet the graduation requirement?
Students need to complete 30 cumulative hours of service prior the Spring Break of their 11th grade year.
9th grade: 10 Total Hours
10th grade: 20 Total Hours
11th grade: 30 Total Hours
However, we encourage students to follow their passions for service and students are welcome to complete their graduation requirement early. Hours submitted above and beyond the graduation requirement (within a 12 month period) can also be applied towards the Presidential Service Award which is ordered by the Community Service Director twice yearly in the Fall and Spring.

Verification Forms may be downloaded from the Student Portal, Community Service Webpage, or picked up from the Director of Community Service's office. Upon completing your service hours, students must have a supervisor at the organization sign the verification form. Scan and upload your completed verification paperwork to the online Community Service Submission Form

How do I apply for a Presidential Service Award?
Presidential Service Awards are presented to individuals who serve the community for a specified number of hours based on age group:
Age 11-15 (during 12 month period of service):
GOLD: 100+ hours
SILVER: 75-99 hours
BRONZE: 50-74 hours
Age 16+ (during 12 month period of service):
GOLD: 150+ hours
SILVER: 175-249 hours
BRONZE: 100-174 hours
Ms. Kerry Enzensperger will send out an email to all students twice each year (fall, spring) asking students to apply for consideration. Applications will be verified against logged hours completed within the last 12 months. If a student's applicant meets the requirements, a Presidential Service Award will be requested for their achievements. If a student misses this application window, they will need to wait until the next application period.
