The Greenville Technical Charter High School music program was started in 2011. Though the school was founded in 1999, there had been a growing desire of the school community to offer fine arts classes. Abe Marsh, Band and Orchestra Director and Fine Arts Department Chair at GTCHS, at that time proposed starting a music program to include Band, Guitar, Orchestra, and Music Technology, as well as Art and Theater classes. Abe Marsh earned his Bachelor’s of Music Education from Furman University and Master’s of Music Education from Converse College. The Fine Arts Department at GTCHS was launched with first classes taught in Fall of 2011. Since that time, the Band has grown from 6 students in its inaugural year to 35 students this current year, and other music classes have seen similar growth.
Every year, GTCHS fine arts students perform a Fall and Spring Concert. The Band performs as a pep band for home basketball games, and has students that earn their way into All-County, All-Region, and statewide Honor bands. Music students also perform at school events and ceremonies. There are two courses for beginning and advanced Guitar students, as well as a Music Technology class. Students have the option to participate in the after school Jazz Club. The music program at GTCHS is vibrant!
