Using CENTURY TECH has helped us support learners when a Teacher is not available and helped focus learners on improving their skills gaps in a personalised path (assisted by the Machine Learning algorithms) that informs the student and teacher where we need to focus our energies.

READ&WRITE + EQUATIO

Due to the promo of our work and the conferences and use of social media in our team we were approached by Texthelp to use their tools Read&Write and Equatio in 19/20.

Consequently, staff and students are now being introduced to these toolkits as a naturally occuring part of their studies in their vocational course as well as their English and maths resit lessons.

We will not see the impact until the 19/20 exams but combined with the other elements it is proving effective and another way to enhance the support from English and maths staff.

MORE 1-1 TIME FOR THE LEARNERS

This was the most requested change students wanted in my initial research in September 2018 and all the adaptations to the English and maths team have had this idea at their heart.

While staff changes have hindered our progress we are creating more opportunities through a new delivery model.

NEW DELIVERY MODEL

Our Senior Management Team has made the following changes for our GCSE learners:

GCSE 3 hours x 31 weeks per GCSE -

* 2 1⁄2 taught hours (split into two sessions of 1 1⁄2 hours + 1 hour)

* The remaining 1⁄2 hour being used for 1-to-1's, small group sessions, blended lessons and use of Century or other Digital tools

* Future Pathways students will join GCSE groups with a 9.00am start, but will not be timetabled in the afternoon slots.

GCSE Fast Track Programme (November resit)

* Learners on the fast track programme will attend their morning or afternoon slot and, in addition, will receive 1.5 hours of additional tuition in small groups (1:4) for the period up to the November exams.

* They will also undertake an additional 1.5 hours of independent directed study which will focus on their areas for improvement.

CONCLUSION

* As a college we have moved our focus away from the student fixating on achieving a Grade 4 or higher.

* We have a focused intention on improving the individual and helping them improve their Personal Best rather than fixating on the 4 or higher ('Pass' grade).

* In 18/19 we had increased student retention in Maths and english, a higher pass rate, and a better overall progress against the starting point for our learners

* A settled teaching team in Maths with focused help from Learning Technologist Charlie James had a positive impact

* Staff changes in the English Teaching team disrupted the excellent progress by this team who have shown real openness to adapting their approach
