Our First Experience in Kanglang Elementary School’s International Classroom!
What an exciting day for our fifth graders! Their very first live online exchange was with École Maxime Fontaine on Réunion Island. During this wonderful meeting, both sides taught each other how to say simple and useful words in our own languages — like thank you, hello, and good morning in Chinese and French. Then came the fun part — an interactive Q&A! We asked each other questions such as, “How many big events do you have each year?” and “What are the main competitions in your sports day?” The students laughed, listened, and learned so much from one another. To make the exchange even more special, our students performed two energetic dances for our friends at Maxime Fontaine. Watching them dance with such passion and joy — don’t you think they deserve a big round of applause?
In recent years, Kanglang Elementary School has experienced a growing student population and class expansion, leading to an increasing shortage of classroom space. To improve the learning environment, the school actively sought government funding and resources. In the 2024–2025 school year, the school received a government grant of NT$1 million to renovate the basement of the north building, transforming it into a new learning space. In addition, with NT$600,000 in funding from the Ministry of Education’s “Sister School Program,” the school installed advanced multimedia and information technology equipment, allowing students to participate in international education courses in a more modern setting. Subsequent improvements—such as floor refinishing, new desks and chairs, and interior decoration—were completed using the school’s own budget. After months of careful planning and construction, Kanglang Elementary School’s International Classroom was officially inaugurated in June 2025, marking a major milestone in the school’s ongoing efforts to promote global education
This is a wonderful video sent from North Cedar School in Iowa, USA! In the video, our American friends enthusiastically introduced their school life and learning experiences. Their classes are very diverse — including art, physical education, reading, math, technology, social studies, and even yoga! Our students watched with great curiosity and excitement. Through the video, we also saw what American students do during recess, such as playing on the swings, kicking balls, and enjoying running games — their playground was full of laughter and energy. The video also featured one of their biggest annual events, the Spring Music Concert, where students performed joyfully in neat outfits, creating a lively and heartwarming atmosphere. Through this video, we gained a closer look at the daily life of American students and truly felt the joy and value of international exchange.
We spent nearly six months preparing for this video. From practicing every single word of the English lyrics to rehearsing the entire song together, from capturing moments of our campus life to designing how the subtitles would appear, from video editing to visual design—every step was filled with everyone’s hard work and dedication. After half a year, we finally completed this film that represents Kanglang Elementary School. Through it, we hope our friends in the United States and France can see glimpses of our learning and daily life here at Kanglang. It’s worth mentioning that the background music blends an English song with a Taiwanese song, symbolizing our spirit of embracing diverse cultures through international exchange. As we step onto the global stage, we hope to share the truth, goodness, and beauty of Taiwan with friends around the world, allowing them to experience our unique stories and heartfelt passion.
We’ve received the postcards from Réunion Island! The French school we’re partnering with—Maxime Fontaine—is truly amazing and unique. Although Réunion Island is a French territory, it’s actually located near Madagascar in Africa, which makes it even more fascinating. Their school is quite small and uses mixed-age teaching, so students from grades 3 to 6 are all part of our exchange program. As we opened each of their handwritten postcards, our students carefully read every line and admired the colorful drawings and distinctive handwriting. Through these heartfelt messages that traveled across the ocean, we could truly feel the sincerity and friendship from our distant friends. This international exchange not only filled the children with excitement and wonder but also broadened their worldviews and deepened their understanding of different cultures.
The fifth graders at Kanglang Elementary School happily watched the self-introduction video sent from Maxime Fontaine School on Réunion Island, Africa. Through the video, they learned about their French partners’ interests, preferences, and favorite leisure activities during holidays. In the video, one student seemed to appear twice, introducing herself again, which made everyone surprised and curious. After the teacher’s explanation, they suddenly realized that the two were actually identical twin sisters! The video not only helped the students gain a deeper understanding of French culture but also brought them closer to their friends from another country, adding fun and delightful surprises to this international exchange activity.
The fifth graders at Kanglang Elementary School were excited to open the letters sent from North Cedar School in Iowa, USA. They carefully read each heartfelt message filled with friendship and warmth. The American pen pals not only wrote in English but also practiced writing our Chinese names, showing great sincerity and thoughtfulness. Some even included beautiful hand-drawn illustrations of their schools, families, or hobbies, full of creativity and enthusiasm. Through reading these letters, the students not only improved their English reading skills but also experienced the warmth of cross-cultural exchange and the charm of learning about a different culture.
The fifth graders at Kanglang Elementary School made a video to introduce our school to students from our partner schools—McKinley Middle School and North Cedar in the United States, and Maxime Fontaine in France. To share Kanglang Elementary with our American and French friends, we worked hard to learn how to describe our playground, sports field, school gate, classrooms, library, and even our school treasures—the “Sun and Moon Stone” and the “Kanglang Tree”—in English. This school tour video is the result of more than a month of our dedicated learning! We would like to give special thanks to Teacher Eric for helping us with the video editing.
The fifth graders at Kanglang Elementary School have been working hard since the beginning of the school year to improve their English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in order to communicate with their learning partners at McKinley Middle School in the United States. By the end of this month, their beautiful handmade cards will be ready! Each card includes a self-introduction written by our students, decorated with their carefully designed drawings and doodles. We hope that our American friends across the Pacific will receive these cards before Christmas and feel happy all year long!
Kanglang Elementary School fifth graders have been working hard to practice introducing themselves in English. We recorded our introductions on video to share our learning progress. Although we still look a little shy in front of the camera, our excitement can’t be hidden. These videos will be sent to our American learning partners across the Pacific Ocean, so they can get to know us better. We are curious and thrilled about this international exchange activity—are our learning partners just as excited as we are?
