Narrative pedagogy is an educational approach that uses stories from patients and healthcare workers to promote learning through reflection, discussion, and perspective-taking. By engaging with first-person narratives, learners move beyond diseases and treatments to consider the experiences, values, cultural backgrounds, expectations, and emotions that shape each patient's healthcare journey.
The Spoken Corpus of Foreign and Immigrant Patient Narratives (the Corpus) provides first-person accounts of healthcare experiences from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) patients living in Japan. These narratives offer educators a resource for helping medical and nursing students explore intercultural communication, develop cultural sensitivity, strengthen empathy, and better understand patient-centered care from the patient's perspective.

The Corpus brings together the experiences of people from a wide range of countries, language backgrounds, ages, and genders who have received healthcare in Japan. This diversity reflects the variety of patients that healthcare professionals may encounter in clinical practice and exposes learners to different perspectives, expectations, and communication challenges. Together, these narratives illustrate how language, culture, and previous healthcare experiences shape patients’ interactions with the Japanese healthcare system.

The narratives span a broad range of medical conditions and healthcare settings, from routine outpatient consultations to emergency care, maternity services, surgery, mental health, and chronic disease management. By presenting diverse health concerns alongside the communication and cultural issues that arose during care, the corpus helps learners appreciate that intercultural challenges are not confined to a single specialty or patient group. Instead, culturally responsive communication is relevant across the full spectrum of healthcare practice.
Each narrative follows a common structure, beginning with personal background information such as how long the speaker has lived in Japan, their level of Japanese proficiency, and when the healthcare encounter took place. This is followed by an account of why they sought medical care and what they experienced during their visit to a clinic or hospital. Speakers were invited to focus on either a single healthcare encounter or a series of visits related to the same chief complaint. Finally, they reflect on their experience, often comparing it with healthcare in their home country.
There is no single "correct" way to use the Corpus. Rather than prescribing a particular teaching method, the corpus is intended as a flexible educational resource that educators can adapt to their own learning objectives, student populations, and instructional contexts.
Depending on the educational goals, the narratives may be used to promote close reading and thematic analysis, stimulate reflective discussion or writing, compare healthcare experiences across cultures, examine communication challenges, or serve as the basis for role-play and simulation activities. We encourage educators to explore the narratives, identify themes relevant to their own teaching, and develop learning activities that best meet the needs of their students.
