Autumn No. 9, Friday 6th December 2019

Gospel of the Week

(The 2nd Sunday of Advent - Year A )

The Work of John the Baptist

“About that time John the Baptist came and began preaching in the desert area of Judea. John said, “Change your hearts and lives because the kingdom of heaven is coming soon.” John the Baptist is the one Isaiah the prophet was talking about. Isaiah said:

“This is a voice of a man

who calls out in the desert:

‘Prepare the way for the Lord.

Make the road straight for him.’”

Isaiah 40:3

John’s clothes were made from camel’s hair. He wore a leather belt around his waist. For food, he ate locusts and wild honey. Many people went to hear John preach. They came from Jerusalem and all Judea and all the area around the Jordan River. They told of the sins they had done, and John baptized them in the Jordan River.

Many of the Pharisees and Sadducees came to the place where John was baptizing people. When John saw them, he said: “You are snakes! Who warned you to run away from God’s anger that is coming? You must do the things that show that you have really changed your hearts and lives. And don’t think that you can say to yourselves, ‘Abraham is our father.’ I tell you that God could make children for Abraham from these rocks. The axe is now ready to cut down the trees. Every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

“I baptize you with water to show that your hearts and lives have changed. But there is one coming later who is greater than I am. I am not good enough to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. He will come ready to clean the grain. He will separate the good grain from the chaff. He will put the good part of the grain into his barn. And he will burn the chaff with a fire that cannot be put out.”

Matthew 3:1-12

Treating Staff With Respect

Please be considerate and polite while you are in and around the school premises. All of our staff and pupils deserve and have the right to work and learn in a school where they are treated with respect and politeness at all times. Anyone who engages in threatening, violent or abusive conduct, whether physically or verbally will run the risk of being asked to stay away from the school for a period of time.

Please speak to our staff in a polite and courteous manner, there is no need for raised or angry voices at any time while visitors are on the school premises and its surroundings.

If you need to come into school to meet with any member of staff please remember to remain calm and polite at all times. If any member of staff feels they are being spoken to in a way that is unacceptable to them they will ask you to re-book an appointment at a later date, when everyone will have a chance to conduct the meeting in a calm and considered way. We appreciate that it may be daunting coming into school to speak to members of staff but everyone has the right to feel safe and secure.

La mulți ani, România!

Last Friday, we celebrated Romania's national day. Class 3G were joined by the parent/carers of our Romanian children to give us a fantastic assembly, which was watched by a full church, including a visit by the Mayor of Newham herself, Rokhsana Fiaz. It was her first visit to St Winefride's and she was very impressed by everyone.

The parent/carers also made lots of food for the Coffee Morning, which was delicious.

Thank you again to everyone who contributed to the day and La mulți ani, România!

Curriculum Focus

On Monday all of the staff at st Winefride's will be taking part in a training session on how to utilise the 'Sumdog' programme to the best of its capability! Once this has been signed off the children will begin to receive their maths homework via 'Sumdog'. Sumdog also have an app available on both android at play store or Amazon and Apple at the App store.

Nativity

Plans are under way for this year's Nativity/Christmas Show. It will take the form of a short Nativity presentation by the Reception children followed by a Christmas Songbook where each class sings their favourite Christmas song, so get ready for lots of singing at home as they perfect their tunes! The Parent/Carer choir will also be performing at the Nativity so it is going to be a very special morning.

Coffee Morning

Miss Khanom's Coffee morning is up and running again on Fridays. Pop in just after 9 o'clock for a drink and a chat and also to see the children perform a song from last week's assembly. Members of the Parent/Carers Forum are also usually around for a chat.

The Rehearsals for the Parent/Carer Choir performance on 20th December are also underway, a link to the songs that the choir will be performing will appear here as soon as they are chosen!

Nuture Academy

We received a visit from Portia of the Nurture Academy who have set up a centre in Stratford. They are working with schools to offer up to ten vouchers a month for free hair appointments for children, beginning in December. If you would like to apply for one of these vouchers please leave your child's name and class at the Reception Desk.

The Nurture Academy is holding its grand opening on Saturday 14th December, so if you would like to be considered for one of the TEN FREE VOUCHERS, please drop a note in to the Reception Desk, for the attention of Mr Savin.

Just One Tree

The Education Space, part of the council that deals with education and training, have joined forces with 'Just One Tree' a small charity that plants a tree for £1 with the aim of planting a forest in the name of the children of Newham. Once completed we will receive a certificate to display at school along with details of where our trees have been planted.

We held a Non-Uniform Day on Friday 22nd November 2019 but unfortunately very few children seemed aware that the day was happening. Therefore we will reschedule the event for early in the Spring Term.

Please remember that this event ties in with our new ESR Curriculum, in the Environmental Stewardship Strand, and we hope you will join us in supporting this very good cause.

Swimming

Once again our Year 3 children will be going to the London Aquatic Centre to take part in their intensive swimming course.

This year the children will be having the lessons during the first two weeks of the Spring Term, beginning on Monday 6th January 2020 and continuing until Friday 17th January 2020.

Due to escalating travel costs, the coach was going to cost over £3,000 for the two weeks, the children will be travelling by public transport and therefore will be attending the sessions wholly during the school day so the children will not have to arrive early at school as was previously the case.

A letter has been given to the Year 3 children providing full information.

As usual there are 15 spaces available for children who are less confident in the water and who would like to have additional lessons. Again a letter has been sent out and places will be allocated by a random ballot if more children apply than we have places for.

Carol Concert

Some of our year 3/4 children are going to perform in a Deanery carol service at St Antony's Church in Forest Gate on Thursday 12th December at 7pm. Please go along if you would like to hear the children of the Deanery sing some beautiful carols.

Winter Reading Challenge

The Winter Reading Challenge launched in all Newham libraries on Saturday 1st December. The aim of the challenge is to read three books of your choice between the 1st December and 11th January 2019. Visit Manor Park library to pick up your special Christmas card reading log where you can collect stickers as you complete the challenge. You can also complete online book reviews at: www.winterreadingchallenge.org.uk. When you have completed the challenge, you can collect a certificate from the library or print it off from the Winter Reading Challenge website. The school with the highest number of finishers will be awarded a trophy so it would be great if lots of children from our school take part in the challenge.

Parent Contribution

There appears to be a little confusion surrounding the 'Parent Contribution' on Schoolmoney. The idea, put forward by the Parent/Carer Forum, was that the school would calculate how much it would expect to ask parent/carers for over the course of the academic year so that families would be able to budget for the year, knowing that no more contributions would be asked for. A sum of £33.00 was agreed between the school and the Forum, which includes non-uniform days, an educational visit and the Summer Fun Day. It does not include any non-uniform days for charity events or things like the Cafod Appeal.

It is also set up so that families may pay in instalments, rather than all at once. A slight problem has arisen with the visits to the pantomimes, where some families have paid and some are yet to do so. This has meant that the school has had to use part of its budget, which is desperately needed to fund the children's education. If you are yet to pay, please make every effort to do so as soon as possible. If you are able to at least make a part payment of £10 to cover the cost of the pantomime, in the interim, that would be wonderful, thank you.

Parish Meeting

There is a parish meeting on Saturday 14th December, Mrs Sotto, one of our governors and Cherrie Temasfieldt one of our former pupils are helping to organise it and they have asked for the following note to be shared with you:

St Stephen’s Festive Fun Day!

Saturday 14 December from 11am - 3 pm.

We would like to invite you all to come along to the church on Saturday 14 December for some Christmas fun! The day will start off with some Christmas decorating around the church followed by a festive quiz for everyone to get into groups, put their Christmas knowledge to the test and maybe even win a prize! There will be food and drink provided throughout the day – maybe even a glass of wine or two! This is an opportunity for all of us to get together and have a laugh, meet new people and get into the Christmas spirit!

We hope to see you all there!

Christmas Jumper Day & Christmas Meal

Our annual Christmas Jumper Day and Christmas Meal will be on Wednesday 18th December. Please come to school wearing a Christmas jumper or red, white or green. The children will also have their Christmas meal on this day and most of the staff will be sharing their lunch time with the children. There is no contribution required for this day

Parent/Carer Forum Meeting

The next meeting of the Forum will now be on Monday 13th January 2020

Christmas Raffle

The tickets for the Christmas Raffle will be going on sale from Monday 9th December. They will cost 20p each or £1 for a strip. Every class will have a prize hamper dedicated to them so the chances of winning are much better than a 'free for all'! The draw will take place after the nativity show on 20th December.

This Week's Prayer

Heavenly Father,

As we see the many stars in the decorations of this season may we be reminded that Jesus is the "Bright Morning Star" and that when we put our hope and trust in him, our future is secure. In Jesus' name we pray.Amen.

God Bless You,

Mr Underwood
