Spring No. 13, Friday 8th April 2022
What Parents/Carers need to know about:
Spring No. 13, Friday 8th April 2022
Pilate called all the people together with the leading priests and the Jewish leaders. He said to them, “You brought this man to me. You said that he was making trouble among the people. But I have questioned him before you all, and I have not found him guilty of the things you say. Also, Herod found nothing wrong with him; he sent him back to us. Look, he has done nothing for which he should die. So, after I punish him, I will let him go free.”
But all the people shouted, “Kill him! Let Barabbas go free!” (Barabbas was a man who was in prison because he started a riot in the city. He was guilty of murder.)
Pilate wanted to let Jesus go free. So he told this to the crowd. But they shouted again, “Kill him! Kill him on a cross!”
A third time Pilate said to them, “Why? What wrong has he done? I can find no reason to kill him. So I will have him punished and set him free.”
But they continued to shout. They demanded that Jesus be killed on the cross. Their yelling became so loud that Pilate decided to give them what they wanted. They wanted Barabbas to go free, the man who was in jail for starting a riot and for murder. Pilate let Barabbas go free and gave Jesus to them to be killed.
The soldiers led Jesus away. At that time, there was a man coming into the city from the fields. His name was Simon, and he was from the city of Cyrene. The soldiers forced Simon to carry Jesus’ cross and walk behind him.
A large crowd of people was following Jesus. Some of the women were sad and crying. But Jesus turned and said to them, “Women of Jerusalem, don’t cry for me. Cry for yourselves and for your children too! The time is coming when people will say, ‘Happy are the women who cannot have children! Happy are the women who have no babies to nurse.’ Then people will say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ And they will say to the hills, ‘Cover us!’ If they act like this now when life is good, what will happen when bad times come?”
There were also two criminals led out with Jesus to be killed. Jesus and the two criminals were taken to a place called the Skull. There the soldiers nailed Jesus to his cross. They also nailed the criminals to their crosses, one beside Jesus on the right and the other beside Jesus on the left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.”
The soldiers threw lots to decide who would get his clothes. The people stood there watching. The leaders made fun of Jesus. They said, “If he is God’s Chosen One, the Christ, then let him save himself. He saved other people, didn’t he?”
Even the soldiers made fun of him. They came to Jesus and offered him some vinegar. They said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!” (At the top of the cross these words were written: “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”)
One of the criminals began to shout insults at Jesus: “Aren’t you the Christ? Then save yourself! And save us too!”
But the other criminal stopped him. He said, “You should fear God! You are getting the same punishment as he is. We are punished justly; we should die. But this man has done nothing wrong!” Then this criminal said to Jesus, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom!”
Then Jesus said to him, “Listen! What I say is true: Today you will be with me in paradise!”
Today is the end of the Spring Term. The school day will finish at 1.30pm. Please collect your children promptly at this time and we wish you a restful and Holy Easter break and to seeing you for the Summer Term on Monday 25th April at 8.45am.
The Grand Final of the Spelling Bee competition was held on Tuesday 5th April. The finalists did a spectacular job of spelling some very difficult words and it was a very close competition.
The winners are:
Reception: Joyanne & Lillian
Year 1 & 2: Ella
Year 3 & 4: Livia & Isaiah
Year 5 & 6: Nathan & Christina

As you can see the spelling was so good it was impossible to separate some of the children so we had joint winners in some year groups. Congratulations to all the winners!
Thank you to Miss Rogan for compering the competition and a huge thank you to the Parent Carer Forum (especially Diane and Malar) for coming up with the idea and for providing all of the prizes and the cupcakes for all of the staff too!
The Easter Egg hunt was also a great success where everyone 'found' their egg or pack of sweets. The Easter egg hunt was free but if you would like to make a voluntary contribution we would be most grateful.
To make the Easter Egg hunt even more special we had a visit from the Easter Bunny!

On Thursday 31st March over 100 children from schools across Newham took part in a gaming based personal finance competition at Stratford Youth Zone. The aim of the challenge was to elevate the financial and digital literacy of young people through an educational approach to gaming. Teams from each school battled it out by speed answering questions on personal finance topics. A big well done to St Helen's who finished in first place and St Winefride's who came a close second. Prizes and certificates for the winners were awarded by the Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz.
To see more pictures from the event please click this link to go to the OLoG Money Wise Challenge page.
Well done to all of the schools and children involved. Well done everyone, if you would like to find out more about Dot Dot fire, a finance app for children click here.
The children will be followed the Stations of the Cross in St Stephen's Church this week and our RE Team children helped to guide the class teachers and children around the church and to lead the prayers, we are very proud of them.
The children's Mini Reports were sent out yesterday.
One of the topics under discussion at the Parent Carer Forum was a new style of 'End of Year Report'. The Forum reps were very happy with the new format and we hope you will find the new style report that you will receive in July more informative and personal to your child.
There isn't a Picture News slide show this week due to the Easter holiday. However we have great news, we have been accepted as a Picture News Advocate School and have been awarded the Advocate Badge! See our review at:

The new summer menu is here! As you will see there is a Jacket Potato option every day with a variety of fillings. Please click the buttons below to see the menus. The menu after the Easter break is the Summer Week 1 Menu.
Last Friday, 1st April 2022, we joined the t Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy Trust. We are all looking forward to building on our strong Catholic partnership in Newham and working together, in Christ, to support the community in Manor Park.
It is likely that you will notice very little change over the coming weeks, other than the Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy Trust logo popping up from time to time!
We've noticed that the usual high uniform standards have been slipping a little for some children recently, especially on days when they come into school wearing their PE kit. Please click the buttons to see our uniform policies.
Some of our classrooms are a little tight for space, so please use the school issue school bag wherever possible. The children do not need to bring very much to school and these bags are more than roomy enough for all their things.
If your child is enrolled in the Breakfast Club please remember the doors are open from 7.45am - 8.05am. If the children arrive later than this they will miss most of the session.
Please clear any arrears before the start of the Summer Term.
Capital Kids Cricket are running an Easter Camp at West Ham Park. Unfortunately the dates don't quite line up with our break but you may still be able to attend as the sessions do not start until 4pm.

We are delighted to let you know that our Parent/Carer Coffee mornings have recommenced! Each week there will be a performance by the children, singing a song from the previous week's assembly. After Easter the first performance will be by the Nursery children.
We would like to remind all visitors to the school that the school is a 'Mobile Free Zone' and that mobile phones should be switched off and kept out of sight at all times while on the school premises, including in the playground.
Congratulations to St George on being the Spring Term House Point Champions with an impressive 14581 house points!
We are now in the Lenten season. Every child was given a Lenten calendar, which was also sent out via MarvellousMe. Please click the photo to see the calendar
The children have all completed their CAFOD challenges, well done everyone. If you have not already done so please send in the sponsor money as soon as possible.
Most people probably won’t be greatly surprised to note that cyber-bullying, screen time and age-inappropriate content remain among the chief concerns about children’s wellbeing online. You might not have realised, however, how great the disparity is between how well teens think they can spot fake news and how effective they actually are at recognising it.
Our guide also condenses Ofcom’s findings to illustrate which platforms and apps were used most by children in 2021; how many young people engage with social media and live streaming (either their own content or viewing others’); and the proportion of children who play online games at various ages.

We are sure that you have heard that it was Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee on 6th February. To help celebrate this the late May bank holiday has been moved to 2nd June and an extra bank holiday has been added for Friday 3rd June to make a four day weekend. However these days are in the June half term break so schools are allowed to choose another day to celebrate.
We would like to remind all parents/carers and visitors to the school that St Winefride's is a 'Mobile Free Zone'. This is to ensure the safety of the children and is good safeguarding practice. If you enter the school premises, including the playground, please keep your mobile phone out of sight at all times.
We will be putting up posters around the school to remind everyone of the policy.
Please click the links below to see our Use of Mobile Phones Policy and Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy:
Sadly we have had to take the decision to no longer allow the children to bring Rubik's Cubes to school. Some children have been distracted by them during lesson time and and there have been some disputes in the playground while using them.
If a child brings a Rubik's Cube into school it will be taken away from them and given to their parent/carer at the end of the day. Please check that your children are not bringing them into school.
The new term dates for the next academic year, 2022/2023, are on the school's website. Please click here to go to the Term Dates page.
Just a reminder that the second instalment for the visit to Grosvenor Hall is now due. Please log on to School Money to pay.
Parent View is the ideal way to tell everyone how great you think St Winefride's is. Follow this link to the Ofsted Website and let them know just how outstanding the school is!
