Summer No. 7, Friday 26th June 2020

Gospel of the Week

(St Peter and St Paul)

Peter Says Jesus Is the Christ

Jesus went to the area of Caesarea Philippi. He said to his followers,

“I am the Son of Man. Who do the people say I am?”

They answered,

“Some people say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah. And others say that you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

Then Jesus asked them,

“And who do you say I am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus answered,

“You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah. No person taught you that. My Father in heaven showed you who I am. So I tell you, you are Peter. And I will build my church on this rock. The power of death will not be able to defeat my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. The things you don’t allow on earth will be the things that God does not allow. The things you allow on earth will be the things that God allows.”

Matthew 16:13-19

RSHE Consultation

A new curriculum for Relationships, Sex and Health Education is mandatory from September 2020. All primary schools must teach relationships education and health education, including education on mental wellbeing, although primary schools are not required to teach sex education. As part of a consultation process we will be sending out a presentation, which will also be available on our website, of how we intend to teach the new curriculum. We will also be sending an online response form, which will be easily accessible via a phone, tablet or PC to enable you respond to the consultation.

The Education service at the Diocese of Brentwood has put together the new curriculum for its schools so you may rest assured that it will be aimed at appropriate levels for the children and will be taught in accordance with Catholic values. The presentation will be sent out by the end of next week along with the link for the response form. please take the time to read the presentation thoroughly and to complete the response form, thank you.

Return to School

As more children return to school, Mr McAteer kindly made this video to explain the new rules that everyone must follow to keep us all safe. Please watch the video, either here on on our website, with your children so that they are aware of what they need to do when they return to school.

Video Message

Even though many of you are not at school we are all still thinking of you. Please click on the picture or this link to see our message to you.

Mission Statement Challenge

The Mission Statement challenge is being postponed for the time being. There a few different reasons for this decision, but mainly, we realise that you have been set quite a few challenges all at once and we don't want you to feel over-loaded and under pressure to complete them all. However, we would still like to have a Whole School Mission Statement Song video, so, rest assured, I will be bugging you at a later date! Thank you to those who have submitted their videos. They have been very useful and will help greatly with knowing what to adapt next time round, so I really do appreciate your efforts.

Summer Reading Challenge

The summer reading challenge has moved online this year. Please follow the below link for information on how to register your child for the challenge: https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/ Happy reading :) Ms. Rogan

Google Classroom Library

We have exciting news, here is a link to a virtual library, where you only have to click on a book to have it read to you on your device. They are mainly picture books and you get to see all of the pictures too! Just click on the link and it will take you to the library and all you have to do is choose the book you want to hear and see. If the link tells you that the video is restricted click on 'Try SafeShare instead' and that will take you to your book.

Each week a member of staff will recommend a book for you to listen to. This week Mr Porritt recommends 'Back of the Bus', a story about Rosa Parks' act of defiance from the viewpoint of a child.

Stephen Lawrence Trust

We have worked very closely with the Stephen Lawrence Trust for some time and we would like to share with you a valuable resource that they sent to us this week. They advise that you read through the articles yourself before showing your children as not all of the articles are suitable for younger children, mainly due to them being aimed at adults and therefore the language and vocabulary may be too difficult. We would urge all of our community to read and take the time to think through the issues raised in the articles, thank you.

We all have the Power to Make a Difference

Art Stars

Rosetta Arts is proud to be a dynamic and diverse organisation, delivering exciting, innovative and creative courses, workshops and experiences for people in east London. We reach out to those who otherwise have little access to the rich and transformative benefits of the arts and education. At the heart of our programming there is something for all ages and stages of a person’s creative learning and development. Our Art Stars programme for children aged 8-12 normally features visual art hubs in the north, east, south and west of Newham that provides uniquely enriching experiences in the visual arts field for Newham children and young people. This broadens children and young people’s horizons and opens up the arts and the opportunities that exist to strengthen their visual thinking and soft skills and to have fun! During COVID, ART STARS! Has gone online and more details can be found here.

We are offering a heavily subsidised programme if children are referred through a Newham school, which lowers the cost per child from £200 to £10. This fee includes engaging teaching from experienced and inspiring tutors who are also working artists themselves, all art materials, and free online exhibitions as part of the course. For children and families who may not be able to afford the £10 subsidised fee, we do have a Bursary programme which could pay the cost for them - the school are able to recommend this for the child for you.

This form is to be completed by teachers/school referees and given to parents/carers who must return it to Rosetta Arts, ℅ CYANA, Unit 8, St Luke’s Community Centre, 89 Tarling Road, London E16 1HN, or info@rosettaarts.org. The data will be stored by Rosetta Arts only and will be used solely for enrolment, administration and evaluation of ART STARS!

If you would like to be considered for this project please contact the school and ask for a Referral Form to be filled in.

ART STARS! is funded by Newham Council's Enrichment Programme.

Free School Meals

It has now been announced that the Free School Meals vouchers WILL BE available to parent/carers over the summer holidays. Please sign up as soon as possible so that you do not miss out.

To see if your child qualifies for Free School Meals please follow the link below:

https://newham-self.achieveservice.com/service/Application_for_Free_School_Meals

Please be aware neither the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme (UIFSM) nor Eat for Free are used to determine whether a child is entitled to Free School Meals (FSM). The only way to determine whether your child is entitled to FSMs is to log on to the Newham website and apply for FSM individually. The school has no say in the decision or your eligibility.

Once your child has been accepted onto the FSM scheme by the borough, we will receive an email which will allow us to apply for the FSM vouchers for you.

MarvellousMe

As you can see throughout this newsletter there are many, many references to MarvellousMe! MarvellousMe is our messaging service and so far nearly 240 of our children have been signed up to it. While this is fantastic news it does mean that about 100 children have not. To sign up you need to download the 'MarvellousMe for Parents' App from whichever App store you use (Apple or android) and then input the details that have been sent to you via email. If you require the sign up details to be re-sent to you please contact the school at:

info@st-winefrides.newam.sch.uk

or by calling 020 8478 0510

Every Friday

To keep you informed and to make life as 'normal' as possible for the children we are aiming to send you a newsletter every Friday!

We will send a reminder via the MarvellousMe App when each issue has been published.

Free Online Chess Lessons

We are delighted to let you know that we have joined Chess in Schools and as a special offer parent/carers may also sign up their children individually for free. There are many resources available to teach the children (but adults can join in too) how to play chess, a skill they may utilise both during the lockdown and when it's all over. Click HERE or on the picture to go to the sign up page.

Children's Meditation

We received the following information from Sr Jude of the Diocese of Brentwood:

During the Coronavirus crisis the Catholic Children’s Society have collaborated with the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM) to develop a series of videos on meditation which children and young people can participate in, whether in school or at home.

Each consists of a phase-appropriate introduction leading to a period of meditation.

The Primary series are released each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Secondary series are released on Thursdays.

The videos can be accessed at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6Cb5LrAlU7_MPTRDMUBcvQ?view_as=subscriber

or through the Catholic Children’s Society website at https://www.cathchild.org.uk/meditation-with-children-young-people/

First Aid Champions

The British Red Cross has released a set of learning materials for children to enable them to learn first aid. Originally these resources were to be released when the teaching of first aid in schools was added to the curriculum in the next academic year but they brought it forward to give children a chance to learn this valuable skill during the lockdown.

Follow this link to go to the home page.

Medical Information Form

We would like to ask you to complete the attached Medical Information Form available on the following link:

https://forms.gle/H16vypoN5Q4JjwVN7

If you have more than one child at the school you will need to fill in a separate form for each child.

Thank you to everyone who has signed up so far.

This Week's Prayer

Dear Father,

Help us to be like Peter on whom you built your church. We pray that our faith may not fail and when we have repented, You will take us to Heaven.
