Gospel of the Week

(The Seventh Sunday of Easter - Year A)

Jesus Prays for His Followers

After Jesus said these things he looked toward heaven. Jesus prayed,

“Father, the time has come. Give glory to your Son so that the Son can give glory to you. You gave the Son power over all people so that the Son could give eternal life to all those people you have given to him. And this is eternal life: that men can know you, the only true God, and that men can know Jesus Christ, the One you sent. I finished the work you gave me to do. I brought you glory on earth. And now, Father, give me glory with you. Give me the glory I had with you before the world was made.

“You gave me some men from the world. I have shown them what you are like. Those men belonged to you, and you gave them to me. They have obeyed your teaching. Now they know that everything you gave me comes from you. I gave these men the teachings that you gave me. They accepted those teachings. They know that I truly came from you. I pray for them now. I am not praying for the people in the world. But I am praying for those men you gave me, because they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And my glory is shown through these men. Now I am coming to you. I will not stay in the world now. But these men are still in the world. Holy Father, keep them safe. Keep them safe by the power of your name (the name you gave me), so that they will be one, the same as you and I are one.

John 17:1-11

School Reopening

As you may be aware, the government will make an announcement on 28th May regarding if they think it is safe to reopen schools from Monday 1st June to Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 pupils. Based on this decision by the government and on agreement from our school governors, we will write to parents/carers on 29th May to update you regarding details of school opening dates and times for those year groups.

I do understand that the possibility of reopening has been met with mixed feelings and would like to acknowledge that the decision to send your child back to school must be taken by each family with deep thought and care. No parent/carer will be penalised if they choose not to send their child back to school in June. As a school, we shall endeavour to work carefully within the government guidelines and with the safety of our children, staff and parents as our primary concern.

We hope you have a lovely half term break.

Half Term Break

Although it may not seem like it the Half Term Break is on us already! There is no need for the children to take part in any home schooling next week, and no work will be set. However if they want to, there are some 'Additional Links' on the Home Learning page on our website, that they may look at and have fun completing if they feel like it.

Video Message

Even though many of you are not at school we are all still thinking of you. Please click on the picture or this link to see our message to you.

House Points

The teachers have been awarding House Points via the MarvellousMe App. Don't worry if you haven't downloaded it yet, the House Points will be there waiting for your when you log in for the first time.

Congratulations to St George on their first victory this half term!

Medical Information Form

Thank you for all your support during these current difficult times. While we pride ourselves on being prepared for most eventualities the current situation has shown us that we need to continue the switch from paper to online information gathering at an increased pace.

To do this we will be sending you a series of emails and messages to gather essential information from you, to ensure that your children are kept safe and your wishes regarding consent are adhered to.

Please be assured that all information gathered will be stored and used in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

So to begin we would like to ask you to complete the attached Medical Information Form available on the following link:

https://forms.gle/H16vypoN5Q4JjwVN7

If you have more than one child at the school you will need to fill in a separate form for each child.

If you have already responded to the recently sent email there is no need to complete the form again.

Thank you to everyone who has signed up so far.

First Aid Champions

The British Red Cross has released a set of learning materials for children to enable them to learn first aid. Originally these resources were to be released when the teaching of first aid in schools was added to the curriculum in the next academic year but they brought it forward to give children a chance to learn this valuable skill during the lockdown.

Follow this link to go to the home page.

As you can see throughout this newsletter there are many, many references to MarvellousMe! MarvellousMe is our messaging service and so far nearly 200 of our children have been signed up to it. While this is fantastic news it does mean that about 100 children have not. To sign up you need to download the 'MarvellousMe for Parents' App from whichever App store you use (Apple or android) and then input the details that have been sent to you via email. If you require the sign up details to be re-sent to you please contact the school at:

info@st-winefrides.newam.sch.uk

or by calling 020 8478 0510

You will not only receive messages but also your child will get House Points, Gold Letters and much more in the coming months, so please take the time to sign up as soon as possible!

Lastly a huge thank you to all those parent/carers who have signed up, there almost 220 children currently signed up and all have received messages, badges, House Points or Gold Letters through the app, so sign up today if you haven't been able to yet, you might even get a 'Joined in!' badge!

Lockdown Photos

We would like to make a gallery of the children, parent/carers and staff (people not their work!) during the Lockdown, similar to our St George's Day Gallery. If you would like to take part please email your photos to info@st-winefrides.newham.sch.uk and we will make a Lockdown Gallery on our website for everyone to enjoy. You don't have to be wearing a mask like Mr Savin!

The Gallery is available on this link.

Free School Meals

There has been much confusion over the distribution of the Free School Meal vouchers. This has mainly arisen because of two factors:

  1. All children in Infants (Reception and Years 1 & 2) have their meals at school paid for by the Government as part of the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme (UIFSM).
  2. The London Borough of Newham have taken the decision to cover the cost of school meals as a policy to ensure all children are able to access a nutritious meal every school day, known as 'Eat for Free'.

However, neither UIFSM nor Eat for Free are used to determine whether a child is entitled to Free School Meals (FSM). The only way to determine whether your child is entitled to FSMs is to log on to the Newham website and apply for FSM individually. The school has no say in the decision or your eligibility.

To see if your child qualifies for FSM please follow the link below:

https://newham-self.achieveservice.com/service/Application_for_Free_School_Meals

Once your child has been accepted onto the FSM scheme by the borough, we will receive an email which will allow us to apply for the FSM vouchers for you.

We have also been notified that the vouchers may take three or four days to come through after you have received notification so please try to remain patient if they do not come through immediately. If after a few days the vouchers have not come through please contact the school.

National Online Safety

As part of our ongoing series of Online Safety Tips from National Online Safety (NOS), we have added a new poster about 14 Ways to be Kind Online.

We will continue to update this list as and when new posters become available. There will also be a link sent out weekly, via MarvellousMe, to a document with all of the poster links included.

Free Online Chess Lessons

We are delighted to let you know that we have joined Chess in Schools and as a special offer parent/carers may also sign up their children individually for free. There are many resources available to teach the children ( but adults can join in too ) how to play chess, a skill thry may utilise both during the lockdown and when it's all over. Click HERE or on the picture to go to the sign up page.

Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi Foundation have launched a new, free Digital Making at Home initiative to support parents and young people with coding at home. You don’t need any coding experience to join in, and all of their resources and activities are free forever.

Every Monday, they release new themed code-along videos about projects designed for all levels of ability. They also provide support tutorials for parents who are interested in learning more about coding tools like Scratch and Python, and over 200 projects with step-by-step instructions that are accessible online at any time — all for free.

Sign up now to start receiving free activities suitable to your child's age and ability straight to your inbox.

Children's Meditation

We received the following information from Sr Jude of the Diocese of Brentwood:

During the Coronavirus crisis the Catholic Children’s Society have collaborated with the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM) to develop a series of videos on meditation which children and young people can participate in, whether in school or at home.

Each consists of a phase-appropriate introduction leading to a period of meditation.

The Primary series are released each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Secondary series are released on Thursdays.

The videos can be accessed at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6Cb5LrAlU7_MPTRDMUBcvQ?view_as=subscriber

or through the Catholic Children’s Society website at https://www.cathchild.org.uk/meditation-with-children-young-people/

Every Friday

To keep you informed and to make life as 'normal' as possible for the children we are aiming to send you a newsletter every Friday!

We will send a reminder via the MarvellousMe App when each issue has been published.

This Week's Prayer

Father,

Protect us and help us to be one with other believers, just as you are one with Jesus.

Amen.
