Gospel of the Week

(The Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A)

A Story About Planting Seed

That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Large crowds gathered around him. So Jesus got into a boat and sat, while the people stayed on the shore. Then Jesus used stories to teach them many things. He said:

“A farmer went out to plant his seed. While he was planting, some seed fell by the road. The birds came and ate all that seed. Some seed fell on rocky ground, where there wasn’t enough dirt. That seed grew very fast, because the ground was not deep. But when the sun rose, the plants dried up because they did not have deep roots. Some other seed fell among thorny weeds. The weeds grew and choked the good plants. Some other seed fell on good ground where it grew and became grain. Some plants made 100 times more grain. Other plants made 60 times more grain, and some made 30 times more grain. Let those with ears use them and listen!”

Matthew 13:1-9

Mr Underwood and Mrs Britton

It is always sad if we have to say goodbye to people at the end of the school year, however it is very unusual to be writing about two such distinguished and valued members of our community leaving at the same time

Mrs Britton joined our family in January 1999, starting as a teacher in Reception and finishing as our Assistant Head Teacher and Special Needs Coordinator. She has been the person that we go to if we needed any help, she is also the kindest and gentlest of souls and over the past 20 years has been a joy to work with. Although she is retiring we hope to see her regularly in the future as both a visitor and a friend.

Mr Underwood began his St Winefride's career as a Year 6 teacher in 1996, the very first year of the SATs tests, a baptism of fire if there ever was one! Obviously he came through it and the children achieved some outstanding results. It was not just his teaching that drew admiring glances, those of us that saw his performance singing 'Karma Chameleon' while accompanying himself on guitar will never forget it, it was outstanding in every way. On a more serious note Mr Underwood has led the school through two 'Outstanding' appraisals from Ofsted and three from the Diocese of Brentwood. Mr Underwood is leaving us to take up the position of head teacher at St Edward's in Upton Park, so we are sure that he will be around to see us as it is only 'down the road'.

It is with great sadness that we see them go but we wish them well in everything they do in the future. Don't worry though the school will continue to serve the children and the Parish, with a new leader and team, may God bless their future endeavours as He does the school.

RSHE Consultation

A new curriculum for Relationships, Sex and Health Education is mandatory from September 2020. All primary schools must teach relationships education and health education, including education on mental wellbeing, although primary schools are not required to teach sex education. As part of a consultation process we are sending out a presentation, which is also available on our website, of how we intend to teach the new curriculum. We are also be sending an online response form, which is easily accessible via a phone, tablet or PC to enable you respond to the consultation.

The Education service at the Diocese of Brentwood has put together the new curriculum for its schools so you may rest assured that it will be aimed at appropriate levels for the children and will be taught in accordance with Catholic values. The presentation will be sent out along with the link for the response form. Please take the time to read the presentation thoroughly and to complete the response form, thank you.

Reports

End of year reports are ready for the children today (Friday 10th July). Those children who are in school will be given their reports at the end of the school day. For those who are not in school, reports will be available to collect from today (Friday 10th July) until Tuesday 14th July from the school office between 9am and 3pm. Any reports not collected by Wednesday 15th July will be posted to home addresses. Please note that these reports reflect the children's work in school up until the end of the spring term as well as any efforts that have been made over the summer term with remote learning.

Details of your child's new class and teacher can be found on the back page of the report.

We cannot hold face to face parent/carer and teacher meetings to discuss reports this year but if you would like to speak to your child's teacher about their report please contact the school to make an appointment to speak to them by phone.

Summer Reading Challenge

The summer reading challenge has moved online this year. Please follow the below link for information on how to register your child for the challenge: https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/ Happy reading :) Ms. Rogan

Google Classroom Library

We have exciting news, here is a link to a virtual library, where you only have to click on a book to have it read to you on your device. They are mainly picture books and you get to see all of the pictures too! Just click on the link and it will take you to the library and all you have to do is choose the book you want to hear and see. If the link tells you that the video is restricted click on 'Try SafeShare instead' and that will take you to your book.

Each week a member of staff will recommend a book for you to listen to. This week Mr Hussain recommends 'The Name Jar' by Yangsook Choi, it starts with a little girl on her journey to her first day at her new school.

Stephen Lawrence Trust

We have worked very closely with the Stephen Lawrence Trust for some time and we would like to share with you a valuable resource that they sent to us this week. They advise that you read through the articles yourself before showing your children as not all of the articles are suitable for younger children, mainly due to them being aimed at adults and therefore the language and vocabulary may be too difficult. We would urge all of our community to read and take the time to think through the issues raised in the articles, thank you.

We all have the Power to Make a Difference

School Reopening in September

We're sure you will have seen that the government has now outlined their plan that all pupils, in all year groups, will return to school full-time from the beginning of the autumn term.

We can confirm that the children will return to their current classes and teachers for Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th September 2020. This will allow for some form of closure for both children and staff on the current school year as well as allow us to complete some "normal" end of year practices including an opportunity to meet with their new teacher and classmates. The children will begin in their new classes from Monday 7th September 2020.

Our current Year 6 children will have information provided by their secondary schools for arrangements for September, they will not be returning to their old classes at St Winefride's on the 3rd and 4th September.

It has been confirmed this week that the school will be closed over the summer holiday for all children including those of key workers. We hope that you all appreciate that our staff have been working throughout the partial school closure including the Easter and half term holidays and now need a break as well as time over the summer period to prepare for all of our children returning in September.

This Week's Prayer

Our Father,

Help us to be like the good soil in our lesson today. Help us to listen to your Word and grow up to be the kind of boys and girls you want us to be. In Jesus' name we pray.

Amen.

God Bless You,

Mrs Brosnan
