Gospel of the Week

(The Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A)

A Story About a Wedding Feast

Jesus used stories to tell other things to the people. He said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding feast for his son. The king invited some people to the feast. When the feast was ready, the king sent his servants to tell the people to come. But they refused to come to the feast.

“Then the king sent other servants. He said to them, ‘Tell those who have been invited that my feast is ready. I have killed my best bulls and calves for the dinner. Everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.’

“But the people refused to listen to the servants. They went to do other things. One went to work in his field, and another went to his business. Some of the other people grabbed the servants, beat them, and killed them. The king was very angry. He sent his army to kill the people who had killed his servants. And the army burned their city.

“After that, the king said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready. I invited those people, but they were not worthy to come. So go to the street corners and invite everyone you see. Tell them to come to my feast.’ So the servants went into the streets. They gathered all the people they could find, both good and bad. And the wedding hall was filled with guests.

“Then the king came in to see all the guests. He saw a man there who was not dressed in the right clothes for a wedding. The king said, ‘Friend, how were you allowed to come in here? You are not wearing the right clothes for a wedding.’ But the man said nothing. So the king told some servants, ‘Tie this man’s hands and feet. Throw him out into the darkness. In that place, people will cry and grind their teeth with pain.’

“Yes, many are invited. But only a few are chosen.”

Matthew 22:1-14

Thank you!

Macmillan Coffee Morning

The Friday Coffee Morning was taken over last week by the World's Biggest Coffee morning! Members of the Parent Carer Forum were on hand to serve coffee, tea, biscuits, cakes and doughnuts to our parent/carers. The children enjoyed hot chocolate in their classes and everyone had a great time! We then sold the remaining donations to the children at break time in place of the usual Friday Free Tuck Shop, all proceeds will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.  A big thank you to all who donated cakes and biscuits. The school community raised £284 which will be sent on to Macmillan shortly.

 BBC Singers - Gaia Performance

Class 5 were invited to take part in a concert by the renowned BBC Singers! They sent us this lovely message with links to hear snippets of the performance:

"I’m writing to say a very BIG thank you and HUGE well done for all of your amazing singing last Friday at UCL East – Marshgate with the BBC Singers and Nicholas Chalmers, Associate Conductor for Learning. We were so very impressed by your enthusiastic and dedicated approach to Earth, Air and Moon – you learnt all of the songs so superbly, and we had such a fantastic time singing with you in school in September, October and at UCL on Friday. You should be very proud of representing your school so beautifully alongside Bobby Moore Academy and Hillyfield Academy – you even got a shout-out on BBC Radio 3 (you can listen via these BBC Sounds links below). Share with all your friends and family!"

In Tune with Sean Rafferty from Friday - 1'09'04 to 1'10'40

Saturday Breakfast show with Martin Handley - from 1'50'36 to 1'53'46

 Commonwealth Children's Choir

The first Commonwealth Children's Choir session took place this week, with children from Year 5 visiting St Edward's to take part in the first rehearsal of the year. More rehearsals will take place over the coming months and we will keep you advised of the performances of the children as they occur during this academic year.

 St Winefride's Icon

Our latest Icon is Matthew Henson, who may have been the first person to stand at the North Pole. He reached the Pole as a member of an expedition to the Arctic led by the explorer Robert E. Peary in 1909.

Peary and Henson made seven expeditions to the Arctic. They hoped to be the first people to reach the North Pole. In 1908 they set out on one of their expeditions, though they did not always stay together. On April 6, 1909, Henson arrived alone at what he believed to be the North Pole. When Peary joined him an hour later, he refused to accept Henson’s calculation. Peary chose a different spot and declared it the North Pole.

When they returned home Peary received most of the credit for the discovery. This was partly because he was the leader of the expedition. But it was also because Henson was an African American. Racial prejudice at the time kept him from receiving credit for his accomplishments.

Later in Henson’s life he gained some recognition for his achievements.  In 1937, he was the first African American to be made a life member of The Explorers Club; in 1948 he was elevated to the club's highest level of membership, an honour reserved for no more than 20 living members at a time. In 1944, Henson was awarded the Peary Polar Expedition Medal, and he was received at the White House by Presidents Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower.

 School Bags

Some of our classrooms are a little tight for space, so please use the school issue school bag, as back packs are simply to big to be stored neatly and safely.

The children do not need to bring very much to school and these bags are more than roomy enough for all their things.

The bags are available from the school office or from My Clothing. They cost £6.50 (+p&p) and will have the school logo on, not the example logo shown on the website.

Plain blue bookbags without the school logo are also acceptable.

 After School  Clubs

The Autumn 1 Half Term After School Clubs are underway.

Some children were signed up to overlapping clubs, a letter was sent home asking for a choice to be made over which club they would like to attend. Some of these letters are still outstanding, please return them as soon as possible to enable other children to attend a club.

Ofsted Inspection Report

I am sure you are aware that several weeks ago the school had a visit from Ofsted.  The official report has now been sent to us and we are able to share it with you.

It has been 14 years since the school was last inspected by Ofsted and in this time there have been a huge amount of changes in both education and the inspection process. Inspections are now far more rigorous and the expectations placed on schools are much higher than there were at the time of our last visit in 2009 so we are delighted and very proud that our report reflects our school with such overwhelming positivity.

Please click on the button below to see our official Ofsted Inspection Report.

House Point Championship

For the second time St Andrew are the House Point Champions with an impressive 2220 House Points. Well done everyone.

Measles cases are rising across the country, with over 102,000 children starting primary school in England being at risk of catching the disease.

Measles is highly infectious and if left unvaccinated nine out of ten children in an early years setting can catch the disease if just one child is infectious.

Vaccines

The annual Flu Vaccine will be available before Christmas, please click the link below to access the consent form. Please read this message from the NHS Immunisation Team:

DEAR PARENT/CARER,

The flu vaccine is being offered at your child’s school again this autumn/winter.

To give consent for your child to have the flu vaccine, please click here:

https://london.schoolvaccination.uk/flu/2023/newham

THE NASAL FLU VACCINE Protects your child from the flu. Protects your family and friends from the flu (especially those who are elderly, young babies, or those who have serious health conditions). Is free Is painless, quick and effective.

We also offer the flu vaccine as an injection, which is gelatine free. This may also be the vaccine of choice for vegans. Please go to our website where you can find out more about the manufacturing of the flu injection, and then decide if the injection is more suited to your child.

Your consent will remain in place for the entire flu season. If your child misses a first visit, you do not need to complete a second form. PLEASE NOTE the flu vaccine will NOT be available to otherwise healthy children after December 15th at all, and so we urge you to return the consent form as soon as possible in case we are not able to visit your child's schools for a second visit this year.

You only need to complete one consent form for each child. If you later change your mind, please call your local team. If your child has this immunisation elsewhere after you have submitted the consent form, you MUST inform Vaccination UK rather than the school. You can also find informational videos on our YouTube channel, including subtitled versions for other languages. We understand that you may have questions about the vaccine. For more information, please go to our website, where you can find a list of FAQ’s, as well as details of our community catch up clinics.

Yours Faithfully, Your Local Immunisation Team Vaccination UK

We have also received information from the NHS about the MMR Vaccine, please click the links below for more information.

School Uniform

Please see the updated Uniform Policy below. We would strongly recommend purchasing non branded items, such as trousers, skirts, shirts, blouses, socks and shoes from supermarkets or other clothing retailers, many of whom will be having return to school sales. We will be carrying out regular uniform checks over the course of the year.

Assembly Videos

Each week the Class presentation during the Achievement Assembly is recorded and then posted on our Vimeo site. Please click the button below to go to our Vimeo site and see the videos!

The Class 4 Assembly from today will be uploaded by Monday.

Safeguarding - Keeping Your Child Safe

What Parents & Carers need to know about

Upsetting Content

They might not be able to pinpoint its location on a map, and they might not fully grasp the historical and political drivers behind the conflict – but in this age where news, images and video can cross continents in seconds, many children are now aware of the terrible recent events in Israel. It’s a situation, of course, that could cause youngsters extreme distress and worry.

Our #WakeUpWednesday guide contains some valuable pointers for supporting children to deal with upsetting content they’ve encountered online – whether that’s the attacks in Israel, ongoing worries over the environment, or something else entirely. Our tips will assist trusted adults in helping young people to process any negative emotions that they may be feeling.

Clever Never Goes

CLEVER NEVER GOES has been developed to replace the out-dated ‘stranger danger’ approach.

Whilst child abduction is relatively uncommon, it’s important that children can recognise the potential signs of danger. Teaching children simply to avoid strangers doesn’t work. Most strangers will help rather than harm children. Conversely, it is often people known to children that pose the greatest threat.

Clever Never Goes moves the focus away from strangers and instead teaches children to recognise when someone (anyone) is asking them to go with them. We call this ‘Go Spotting’. In doing so, the programme aims to give children practical safety skills which they can use as they get older and become more independent.

It’s about safety – but it’s also about building children’s abilities to engage with the outside world, and giving parents the confidence to let them.

Picture News

You may have seen in the news the story of the tree in the 'Sycamore Gap' on Hadrian's Wall being cut down. This week's question asks: "How can we remember things thjat were important to us?"
