Gospel of the Week

The Second Sunday of Advent - Year A

The Work of John the Baptist

“About that time John the Baptist came and began preaching in the desert area of Judea. John said, “Change your hearts and lives because the kingdom of heaven is coming soon.”

John the Baptist is the one Isaiah the prophet was talking about. Isaiah said:

“This is a voice of a man

who calls out in the desert:

‘Prepare the way for the Lord.

Make the road straight for him.’”

Isaiah 40:3

John’s clothes were made from camel’s hair. He wore a leather belt around his waist. For food, he ate locusts and wild honey. Many people went to hear John preach. They came from Jerusalem and all Judea and all the area around the Jordan River. They told of the sins they had done, and John baptized them in the Jordan River.

Many of the Pharisees and Sadducees came to the place where John was baptizing people. When John saw them, he said:

“You are snakes! Who warned you to run away from God’s anger that is coming? You must do the things that show that you have really changed your hearts and lives. And don’t think that you can say to yourselves, ‘Abraham is our father.’ I tell you that God could make children for Abraham from these rocks. The axe is now ready to cut down the trees. Every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

“I baptize you with water to show that your hearts and lives have changed. But there is one coming later who is greater than I am. I am not good enough to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. He will come ready to clean the grain. He will separate the good grain from the chaff. He will put the good part of the grain into his barn. And he will burn the chaff with a fire that cannot be put out.”

Matthew 3:1-12

We Are Together at Christmas

Christmas is quickly approaching but this year could be more challenging for many as a result of the cost of living crisis. Against this backdrop, Newham Council is keen to bring our communities together at Christmas – and they are asking for your help. This year, the Council is organising a borough wide campaign ‘We are Together at Christmas’ to harness and encourage the community sprit this borough is famed for. The 'We Are Together at Christmas' campaign has two free to attend elements:

A series of Christmas light ‘Switch On’ events from 19 November.

The Newham ‘Big Christmas Lunch’ week from 12-17 December where our ambition is to host, and encourage, as many community Christmas lunches as possible across the borough in a single week.

Christmas Lights Switch On Events

There will be Christmas Lights Switch Ons across the borough. To find out where your local Christmas Lights Switch On is taking place, click here.

Christmas is known to be a difficult time for people and with the Cost of Living Crisis this year it will be even harder. The Council would like to spread some Christmas joy as far and wide as possible, however cannot do this alone. If you would like and are able to do so, join us spread some magic this Christmas. From 12 – 17 December, we would like you to join us in holding a Christmas lunch.

In partnership with The Eden Project, we have put together resources to help support you to plan and deliver a lunch. Click here to view the resources or visit The Eden Projects website for more amazing ideas.

House Points

An unusual week this week with both St George and St Patrick gaining 1750 house points and therefore sharing the honours!

St Andrew and St David were only separated by 5 house points too, so a great week all-round.

As usual the House Captains and Vice Captains did a fabulous job of collecting, counting and returning the tokens, well done everyone!

What Parents & Carers need to know about

Social Media and Mental Health

Using social media has plenty of potential benefits for young people: it helps them stay connected to their friends, hear contrasting views on the world, find reassurance or support, and ease social anxiety. It also brings, however, a corresponding number of negative possibilities – including compulsive use, unhealthy comparisons with others online and exposure to harmful content.

Ironically – for a medium designed to enable engagement with other people – social platforms can actually lead to children feeling increasingly isolated and lonely, taking an obvious toll on their mental wellbeing. This week’s guide has our top tips on how trusted adults can support healthier social media habits in young people.

This Week's Prayer

Dear Jesus,

We look forward to the day when you return.

Help us to live in such a way that we will be ready when you come.

Amen.

God Bless You,

Mrs Brosnan

Newham Talking Therapies

We have recieved a message from Newham Talking Therapies offering Wellbeing Workshops for people over 18 in the local area, please click the buttons for the posters and read below:

"Hello

I’m emailing to advertise the Wellbeing Workshops we are running this November at Newham Talking Therapies. I wonder if you might be able to share this with your staff, any students (18+) and also with parents/caregivers?

What can I expect from the workshop?

Each workshop is an hour long and will be held on MS Teams. They are single, standalone sessions where we aim to provide educational information on a specific wellbeing topic. We will also provide general, evidence-backed strategies on how you can look after your wellbeing and improve your quality of life. If you feel that the workshop isn’t enough, I would recommend you still come along as we also share information on how Newham Talking Therapies can offer further support for your mental health and general wellbeing.

What topics do you cover?

· We cover common mental health and wellbeing issues. For instance, we provide workshops on managing low mood, anxiety… using mindfulness to manage emotional difficulties & stress … the relationship between food and mood and so on – to find out more, please have a look at the posters attached.

· We also cover topics related to long-term health conditions – also attached in the email.

· We also run a workshop space dedicated for staff working in health, education and social care sectors. This month, we will be providing a space to think about how your confidence affects your work life and vice versa.

Who can attend?

Anyone aged 18 and older who live, work or study in the area are welcome to come. We can only allow a person to attend 1 workshop per month so if you’d like to attend multiple workshops, please make sure that you have registered them for different months.

How can I attend?

We ask everyone to complete a registration form:

https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=slTDN7CF9UeyIge0jXdO4y0-YCymLt1Etaug6JpG_QdUNU1LM05JQlMyWlVDOEhLS0hESUtOQUJUSy4u

On the form, please can you write down the exact name of the workshop as it says on the poster. Once we have processed your registration, you will then receive a confirmation email which will include all the details to the workshop and the MS Teams link to the session. We also send reminder on the day of the workshop.

If you have any questions / queries, please don’t hesitate to email me back and I will do my best to get back to you shortly."
