This week we have been developing children’s independence and self-care skills through everyday classroom routines. We have been practising following visual routines, understanding classroom expectations, and completing familiar tasks as independently as possible. We have also been encouraging children to communicate their needs by requesting “Help”, “More” and “Finished” using speech, Makaton, gestures or a communication board.

We have been busy settling into our new classrooms and getting to know our new friends. The children have been learning some of their new routines and have had lunches at school. 

We have been reading the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have introduced to the children the Year 1 Common Exception Words and have started to use them in our writing. This week's word is ‘she’. In Maths we are focusing on touch counting and correct number formation. 

The pupils have settled into Year 4 extremely well and have made a fantastic start to the new school year. In Geography, we have begun to explore the fascinating Amazon rainforest biome, locating Brazil on a map and learning about its geographical features. The children have also enjoyed developing their speaking, listening and creative skills by planning and creating their own David Attenborough-style rainforest documentaries. In Maths, we have started to develop our understanding of place value, working with numbers up to 1,000 and exploring the value of each digit. In Religious Education, we have begun learning about the covenant God made with Abraham and are developing our understanding of the importance of promises and relationships with God. It has been wonderful to see the pupils' enthusiasm, curiosity and positive attitudes to learning during our first few weeks together. 

This week in English, we have been exploring different types of clauses, including main clauses, subordinating clauses and relative clauses. We have been learning how to identify and use them to make our writing more detailed and interesting.

In history, we have begun our new topic on the Space Race. We have been discovering some of the key events and people involved, including President Eisenhower, NASA and Yuri Gagarin, and have started to explore how the race to space unfolded.

In maths, we have been learning place value up to 1,000,000.

It has been a busy and exciting week for Year 6! Cairo Class have shown fantastic focus and determination while completing their first set of mock SATs. Alongside this, they have begun researching World War Two and have started their new RE topic, Creation and Covenant. Meanwhile, Brasilia Class have enjoyed a fantastic World War Two focus week at IntoUniversity, learning about propaganda and significant figures such as Anne Frank and Alan Turing. A real highlight was our visit to Peterborough Museum, where the children particularly enjoyed experiencing the air-raid shelter and imagining what life would have been like during the war. The week concluded with a visit to ARU Peterborough, where the children created and confidently shared their own presentations. It has been wonderful to see both classes showing such enthusiasm, resilience and curiosity in their learning this week.
