Year 4 had a truly bee-rilliant time this week during their fascinating trip to the Twickenham Apiary. The children became real mini-experts on our favourite pollinators, diving into the incredible life cycle of the bee and discovering the unique roles that different types of bees play within the hive.
They also explored the science behind the sweetness, learning exactly how honey is harvested and even examining the complex chemical composition that makes honey so unique.
The absolute highlight of the day was the hands-on experience. The children showed wonderful care and confidence as they were given the opportunity to hold drone bees. They were fascinated to learn that because drone bees do not have stingers, there was absolutely nothing to fear! Both the bees and the children seemed completely at ease with one another throughout the session.
It was a fantastic, memorable insight into the world of beekeeping and honey production. Well done to Year 4 for being so brave, curious, and respectful during this wonderful trip!
We were delighted to welcome parent Jo Moore into school this week to lead a fantastic art lesson for both Year 4 classes. Focusing on mixed media, light and dark, pupils explored shading techniques using 6B pencils. They learnt the difference between gradient and contrast to create a three-dimensional effect in their sketches, drawing inspiration from the photography of Karl Blossfeldt. Finally, the students created their own stunning pieces of art using real plants and flowers. Thank you, Jo. You do so much to support the children's creativity across the school.
