Week 33 - Page Two

ALL ABOUT ISLAM WITH MRS KHAKI

Year Three is learning about Islam in RE and who better to give them an insight than St Stephen's staffer, Nusrat Khaki. The children are learning about the Four Pillars of Islam and noting the myriad of similarities with other world religions. Did you know that Jesus, Moses, Gabriel, Abraham, to name but a few, all feature in Islam? The spellings differ slightly, but the characters are just the same.

Mrs Khaki swung by Year Three to answer questions to answer posed by our children and to show them how she prays. Over to Mrs Khaki: "I was so thrilled by the intelligent questions of Year Three and how interested they were in finding out more about Islam. First up, I showed them that before I pray, I need to perform the Wudu. This is when we perform our ablution before prayer. It is essential that we are purified. I then explained that my prayer mat has to face Mecca and showed the children how I use a compass to get the direction." Afterwards, Mrs Khaki showed us how she needs parts of her body to touch the mat when she kneels down - forehead, knees, feet, toes, hands and fingers.

Year Three really enjoyed this practical learning. In fact, when it came to firing questions at Mrs Khaki, the children ran out of time, so there will be a return visit, when she will talk us through her pilgrimage to Mecca. Thank you so much Mrs Khaki.
