At our school, we want to ensure our pupils stay safe while enjoying the digital world. This week, we are focusing on livestreaming - an online activity that many children and young people engage with.
Livestreaming is when an individual broadcasts video live over the internet in real time. Viewers can tune in and watch these live streams from virtually any device connected to the internet, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and smart TVs.
While livestreaming can be fun and interactive, there are risks associated with watching live broadcasts that parents and carers should be aware of:
Unfiltered Content: The main risk is that your child may see or hear something inappropriate, including themes, language, or content that is not suitable for their age group.
Lack of Real-Time Moderation: Because livestreaming happens live in real time, it is extremely difficult for platforms to moderate content before it is seen by viewers.
Here are four simple steps you can take to help protect your child while they are online:
Check Age Ratings: All online platforms have minimum age requirements. Ensure your child only accesses platforms that are appropriate for their age. For example, TikTok has an age rating of 13+.
Set Up Parental Controls: Apply appropriate parental controls and strict privacy settings on any apps, websites, or devices your child uses.
Stay Engaged: Take an active interest in what your child is doing online. On a regular basis, ask them to show you what apps they are using and what content they enjoy watching.
Teach Reporting & Talking: Make sure your child knows how to use the blocking and reporting tools built into the apps they use. Above all, remind them that they can always talk to a trusted adult if they see or hear anything online that makes them feel worried, uncomfortable, or confused.
