ATTENBOROUGH SKETCHES IN THE SUNSHINE

When the sun shines, and the lesson allows, it is lovely to take our learning outdoors. Last week, in their outside classroom on the artificial class, Attenborough class enjoyed a spot of sketching. A little still life or two of some cuttings was their subject.

We caught up with Mrs Cotton for the full story: "We  have been learning about plant reproduction, experimenting to if we can grow a new geranium plant from a cutting. The scientific skill in action here is observation."

Indeed, back in the classroom, the young scientists learned that taking cuttings from a plant is an artificial method of asexual reproduction. If successful, new plants will be genetically identical to the parent plant!

PANKHURST SORTS PLANTS WE CAN EAT

Year One is learning which bits of the plant we can safely eat and, once we have established it is edible, whether it be a fruit, a seed or a stem. Not to mention roots and leaves! That is an awful lot of sorting for one science lesson. The children are very knowledgible about plant parts and they know that if they are unsure whether something is suitable and safe to eat, they must always check with parents and carers first before munching.

Drowning prevention week 17-24 June

With the weather getting warmer, it is Drowning Prevention Week from next Saturday, and the Royal Life Saving Society have some brilliant resources on drowning prevention. (rlss.org.uk)

There’s a printable/digital poster with a QR code that takes you to their site, and a very good Water Safety for Families Booklet (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1j_k9cHoWUyuybW0LbLdkorO4NjQxLvGF/view?usp=sharing), which covers:

Water Safety

And so on….

There is also a drowning prevention animation that the story of a young girl who is missing out from having fun in the water as she does not feel confident - up steps an RLSS UK Lifeguard who tells her all about her local Lifesaving club. She soon becomes a Rookie Lifeguard – watch to find out more. https://www.rlss.org.uk/drowning-prevention-week-animation
