RIVER WATCH WITH YEAR FOUR
Year Four's current Geography topic about rivers, saw the young geographers going to the nearby River Crane to test the velocity of the water. The children are learning that the speed at which water flows in a river directly influences erosion and sediment transport. It can be measured using various methods, including float techniques (timing a floating object over a set distance) or more advanced methods like acoustic Doppler current profilers. Simple was best for Year Four and the children dropped twigs from the bridge and measured and observed how quickly they travelled underneath. After predicting and carrying out their experiment, the children went back to class to write it up.
Meanwhile, in Design and Technology, Year Four are designing their own hanging decorations. They will then take up their sewing needles and felt to bring these lovely designs to life. As befits the upcoming festive season, many have a Yuletide flavour!
