This year, as part of our DT curriculum, Year Four’s Food Technology project was to research, design and create a nutritious lunch which included all the main food groups in the right quantities to create a balanced and tasty meal. So, they made a trip to Mrs Cox’s house for a big ‘Food Club’ session. This involved lots of preparing and cooking skills and an element of heat to create their meal so they made a vegetable pasta dish with either a fresh tomato sauce or a fresh white cheese sauce. They had to make sure that they added protein to the carbohydrate for extra energy and nutrients! Every student took part in making their chosen sauce and using heat to do so. They followed their designs, chopping, slicing, shredding, grating and stirring their ingredients together to create a delicious lunch which they all enjoyed eating! They then worked as a team to tidy up and clean the kitchen each taking on a role and learning and using valuable life skills like washing up and sweeping the floor! They will now evaluate their cooking and recipes back at school, deciding what worked and what could be improved so that they take real ownership for their project. It was amazing and a real
privilege to see and hear all our students enjoy this experience of bringing the nutrition theory to life, using their cooking skills and enjoying their food with their peers. Above all, they made the connection that what they eat affects how they feel and their health so this knowledge will help them in life to make positive choices. Well done Year 4 Bon appetite! And, Mrs Warburton, who leads Design and Technology with Mrs Dale, came to see us in action. We hope she enjoyed it. She said she was impressed with our skills and expertise in the kitchen.
Our Year Five boys football team managed to secure a place in the 'Battle of the Boroughs' tournament, which pitted Richmond schools against their counterparts in Kingston.
Our boys were fabulous on the day and we could not have asked for more effort. We won our initial matches 2-0, 2-0, 1-0 and 2-0 and secured the top spot in our group. The boys were extremely nervous in the last group game, as the team they were playing had two academy players. However, they played so well and victory was theirs. Then it was on to the quarter finals. Despite hitting the post/bar three times and completely dominating our opponents, not allowing them a single shot at goal, we could not manage to score. Therefore, the game went to the dreaded penalties, which unfortunately was the hurdle we fell at.
To make matters more agonising a team we beat 2-0 earlier in the day made the final. However, all the boys performed brilliantly, picking a player of the tournament is impossible, so well done to Aydin, Seb, Ali, Peyton, Oli, Raff and Freddie.
The presentation of our children's work is so important. This starts with helping them write clearly and confidently in a flowing, cursive script. Regular handwriting sessions enable our children to focus on their lettering. Here we give you Year Four producing some beautiful descender letters in this week's session. When it comes to laying out the work in their books, we opt for a standardised presentation throughout the school, this becomes embedded as our children move through the year groups. We believe that encouraging our children to present their work as neatly and carefully as they can gives them a sense of pride in their achievements and allows them to showcase their best learning.
