FUNDRAISER FOR EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS RAISES £10k AND ORGANISERS MEET THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF WALES
One of our lovely parents, Fulya, and her friends from the Richmond Turkish Women's Group got to meet the Prince and Princess of Wales after they organised a fundraiser for the charity DEC (the Disasters Emergency Committee) to aid victims of the recent Turkish and Syrian earthquake. Held in our school hall, this amazing effort raised an extraordinary £10k!
Mrs Bachour went along to represent St Stephen's (see her pictured above with Fulya and the royals). She said: "I was very lucky to be invited to an event to celebrate different community groups that raised money for DEC/had been out giving aid to Turkey and Syria. The event was held at Hayes Mosque."
"The event was a chance for The Princess and Prince of Wales to find out about what people had been doing to offer support. I felt very privileged to talk to the royal family today and to represent St Stephen's."
After the initial two earthquakes on Monday February 6, a third earthquake hit two weeks later with a magnitude of 6.4 in Hatay in Turkey, followed by an aftershock of 5.8, causing more buildings to collapse in Turkey and Syria. It is estimated that more than 50,000 people have now died and colossal damage has been caused to housing, infrastructure, schools, and hospitals. The UN estimates that 10.1 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
DEC launched the Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal, which now totals more than £121 million thanks to the generosity of the UK public. The funds are already providing urgent relief for people affected by the earthquakes. DEC charities have been helping people in both Turkey and Syria by providing emergency shelter, medical care, hot food and food parcels, blankets, bedding and other household items, clean water and safe spaces for children. More details are available here.
