A Message from Mrs Killick
I had the pleasure of attending all masses last weekend at St Colman's church and St Paul's. It was wonderful to see past, present and future children from our school community actively involved in the Mass as well as serving the community in ministries.
However, I was somewhat disappointed by the behaviour of some of our younger children at St Paul's church, which is currently taking place in the school hall. When I spoke during the Masses over the weekend I shared with you how we have high expectations of your children and how spiritual and moral development is a huge part of their learning here at St Paul's.
I found their behaviour not only distracting for worshipers but also for the other children in the congregation. Having to watch their peers play games, run around the top hall and speak throughout Mass, whilst they remained focused and prayerful.
These children would not expect to behave like this during Masses or worship at school so please be respectful and support your children in having the same expectations. Thank you in advance for your support with this.
Finally, I wish you all a wonderful half term break with your families, and we will see you all again on Monday 2 June.
Love Yourself
Last week, our St Paul's children celebrated Mental Health Week. Our theme was "Self Love at St Paul's." Through our PSHE lessons and mental health activities across the week, we focused on teaching our children the importance of their own self worth, raising their own self esteem and encouraging positive wellbeing.
In the pictures, you can see children across the school coming to our school display to look at themselves in the mirror and write one thing they love about themselves. These reflections that the children have made will stay on display permanently now as a constant reminder to our children that they are all worthy and they should all LOVE themselves!
Prayers in different languages for one Whole Community
On Wednesday morning, to enrich our culture day experience we had our weekly Mass with prayers read in different languages.
We prayed in Polish, Tagalog, Croatian, Owo, French and Spanish but we would have added more languages if we had the chance.
This was a wonderful experience of feeling part of a big family community in Christ.
We have Culture
On Wednesday 21 May, we celebrated Culture Day. What a celebratory day we had! Children were invited to come to school dressed in their native clothing and were given a 'passport' and each class was given a country to focus on for the day. This passport will now continue through the school with them as we revisit this day of celebration each year.
Classes took part in a range of activities such as art, cooking, music and studying traditional artefacts. At the end of the day, we had an assembly to share and celebrate our learning.
A HUGE thank you to all our staff, parents and children who contributed to this wonderful experience for our children and a big shout out to Mrs White and Mr Lorca who shared their Spanish and Filipino cultures with us all!
Sail Away
9 lucky children from St Paul's have had the opportunity to learn to sail. This week was their first opportunity to sail independently and what an amazing job they did . The children had to try and sail from one bouy to the next. There were plenty of laughs and screams, including one capsize and two boats stuck in the mud :)
We look forward to watching the children develop their skills over the next 6 weeks.
At the bottom of the Deep Blue Sea
Year 6 had the pleasure of welcoming Sea Keepers to St Paul's this week. Sea Keepers are a global organisation that promote ocean conservation and research.
The children were able to learn about the different types of marine habitats and organism that live in the deep depths of the ocean. They had the opportunity to ask real scientists questions about deep-sea life and some of the threats that our global ocean faces.
Roaming Romans
The children in year 3 and 4 had an amazing experience back in time, looking at the relics of Fishbourne Roman Palace.
They were able to experience dressing up in Roman costume, creating their own mosaics and spending time in the Roman gardens.
Mrs Killick received a lovely email from the team at Fishbourne Roman Palace praising the enthusiasm and exceptional behaviour of our children. A HUGE well done to all those children who represented St. Paul's so wonderfully.
Dear Mrs Killick,
I am writing to let you know that I was so impressed with your classes this week on their visits to Fishbourne Roman Palace. The children were very enthusiastic in the workshops, and their conduct was superb. Their teachers and adult helpers were really supportive and helpful, and it was a pleasure to meet them all. The children asked great questions in the workshop and they were polite to all who spoke to them. We very much look forward to welcoming your school back to Fishbourne Roman Palace in the future!
All best wishes,
Andie
Learning Officer

Please would you send a box in with your child after half term
Thank you.
Lego League After School Club
It was great to see our children enjoying and completing the Lego League. Thank you to Mrs Rodrigues and Mrs Secci for running this club.
The children were awarded their Lego medals at the end of the program.
This week we the children have been learning about the life cycle of a frog.
Kirsty bought in four tadpoles. The children have been watching them start to grow legs and trying to guess how long they will take to turn into frogs.
For Cultural Day on Wednesday we learnt and celebrated the different cultures of our nursery children and their families. We have families from various countries and cultures in the nursery.
This includes; Africa, Bangladesh, Brazil, Croatia, England, El Salvador, Iraq, Ireland, Nigeria, Philippines, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Zimbabwe.

Year 6 SATS
A huge well done to our Year 6 children who were phenomenal in their application with their exams this week. Their annotations and use of taught skills were visible whilst I circulated the rooms to ensure that the tests were administered as per the guidelines. We are all immensely proud of you Year 6 and remember a SATs exam score does not tell us about who you are as a person. You are all far more special than a number. Enjoy a restful weekend.
Month of Mary
The Precious Month of May is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
As we start the month celebration for the Virgin Mary , the school was given a gift by
Fr Andrew of wonderful wooden statue of Our Lady with the Child.
The children pray during mass to the Virgin Mary and now
they can relate to her anytime they feel they need to or would like to.
Thank you Father.
Our May devotional journey:
The practise of praying the Rosary.
Thursday afternoon, after their SATs, Year 6 opened our devotional journey praying the Rosary and giving thanks for their life. They had the opportunity to experience the peace reached through the prayer of the Rosary entrusting their need to the Virgin Mary. Then, on Friday morning, all the classes dedicated half an hour to meditate the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary with an introduction led by adults. This was a special moment praying together for one another.
Let's Celebrate
After weeks of hard work and dedication, Year 6 celebrated the end of their SATs with a well-deserved picnic at Portchester Castle. The sun was shining as the students relaxed on the grass, enjoying their picnic, playing games, and having a very much deserved relax! It was a perfect way to mark the end of a challenging time and the beginning of new adventures. Thank you to Mr Burgess and Max for the very much needed ice pole delivery and all our volunteers who made the trip possible!
Cultural Day
Wednesday 21 May
We will be celebrating all the wonderful cultures in our school on 21 May and on this day children are invited to come to school dressed in their native clothes of their heritage.
Children from England can come in their dress down clothes or clothes representing the colour of our flag - red, white and blue.
This will be a wonder day for us all to learn about the different cultures that make up our school community.
SunSeekers Art in our Community
This week our children had the opportunity to participate in a community art workshop led by SunSeekers! The children were helping shape a new mural that will be going up in our local area. They had to think about what makes Paulsgrove special and what would they like to see in Paulsgrove in the future.
It was wonderful to see our children engaging with the wider community and exploring their artistic talents.
That's Cracking
This week we have had some 'eggciting' visitors arrive in Reception! 5 ducklings eggs are now living in our classroom! We are waiting eagerly for them to hatch! We have been learning about what they will look like and what things they will need. once they do hatch.
This week the children have been reading the story ' The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle. We have been learning all about the life cycle of the butterfly too. They worked together to create their own caterpillar, which has been displayed in our story corner.
The pre-school children have begun their set 1 sounds for RWI, have been learning the sounds 'm' and 'a', as well as trying to write the letters. We have been practising our Fred talk, to help to blend and segment some cvc words.
As a big well done to the Year 6 children on completing their SATS, we made some yummy cakes for them to enjoy.
Here is this weeks phonics homework for our Year 1 children.
Please watch the video, practise the sounds and challenge words as regularly as possible.
We can do it!

We offer our prayers and congratulations as he begins this sacred ministry of leading the faithful around the world. May the Holy Spirit guide him in wisdom, compassion, and strength.
On Wednesday morning Fr Andrew offered our Eastertide Mass with the intention to be united with the Cardinals of the Conclave while they made this important decision.
Victory in Europe 80
On Thursday 8 May 2025, we marked the historic 80th anniversary of VE Day in school. There was an assembly to launch VE day and classes completed their own learning about VE day during the day.
In the afternoon there was a whole school VE day 'street party' on the field.
We had wonderful decorations (bunting and flags) for the party which were made by the children.
This day was important to share with the children so that they remember how others have given us freedom whilst sacrificing their own lives through the war.
Polite Reminder
When collecting your child(ren) at the end of the day please would you ensure that you are fully dressed whilst on school site. We need to be setting the children a good example and coming onto school site 'shirtless' is not acceptable. Thank you in advance

On Your Bike!
Year 5 have been learning the important skill of cycling and how to cycle safely on roads this week. It was especially lovely to see almost all of the children signed up for this amazing and free training, thank-you to all their parents for this.
The children have made great progress in their cycling skills, whether riding a bike for the first time or mastering how to cross a junction. It has also been great to see them enjoying being outside, active and challenging themselves.
Well done Year 5.
Footie Mad!
Girls from Year 3/4 took part in a community football event today. The girl worked well as a team and were positive throughout the event. One of our amazing pupils was also selected to receive the fair play award for her attitude towards others at the event.

Welcome to this weeks newsletter, as you can see it has been a fun filled exciting learning week for our children.
Mrs Killick and Miss Podyma are thrilled to share that St Paul's has been chosen to work with two trainee educational psychologists (TEPs) from the University of Southampton on children's views of relational and restorative practice. They will be working with a focus group of children (selected by us) to find out the children's experiences of RRP. Today they came in and observed the school's check in circles and how our children facilitate these groups; ensuring that every child's voice is heard, valued and listened to. Please ensure you read the letter sent to you today on Arbor and please contact the school if you do not give permission for your child to be spoken to around their experiences of RRP.
Don't forget it is bank holiday and school will be closed on Monday. We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.
Our Ambassadors
On Wednesday we had a special visit from two pupils from Oaklands school who are Catholic Social Teaching Ambassadors. They came to visit our St Paul's Ambassadors to explore how CST is lived out here at St Paul's.
It was an enriching day of formation sharing and they all enjoyed working together on the Catholic Social Teaching Principles by reflecting on how those principles are lived out in our Mother Mary, as we start the month of May which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Let's Celebrate
On Tuesday Reception invited parents and careers to their celebration of the word in St Paul's Church.
The children were amazing at listening and responding to the Scripture and reading prayers.
It was lovely to see so many parents attend.
Thank you for joining us

Stop in the Name of the Law!
To launch our new book 'Cops and Robbers,' the Year 1 children discovered exciting clues on the carpet, including a police hat and robber’s top! They then used the clues to guess the title of our new story and enjoyed exploring new words as we read it together.
Later, we had a very special visitor—a real police officer! The children asked fantastic questions and loved hearing about how robbers are caught and what happens next.
A fun and memorable day full of learning!
VE 80
This week our wonderful year 6 children joined the Music Hub to produce a recording to commemorate the 80 anniversary of VE day.

They took part in lots of team games to show off their racket skills.
To begin Year Two's new English topic based around the core text "Greta and the Giants", our class hook was to create signs to encourage others to stop climate change.
We wrote signs such as "Save our planet!", "Stop burning forests," "Protect habitats" and "Protect our environment."
We then marched around the school grounds shouting and protesting about Climate Change.
Watersports Fun
This week some of our Year 4 and 5 children went to the Andrew Simpson Centre to start their ten week course in sailing.
This week they learnt how to read a weather forecast, discussed which weather is the best to go sailing in, drew what a good/bad sailing day would look like and what they would need to wear to keep them safe on the water. Some of these included
Wetsuits
Spray jackets
Salopettes
Helmets
Buoyancy aids.
They also had to crack a code to find where the sailing kit that had been hidden on the field.
They had a great time and are very much looking forward to the coming weeks.
Please have a look at this weeks phonics learning for Year 1 children to prepare them for their phonics screening test in June.

Some of the children also made collage animal masks.
We have also been enjoying the sunny weather, in the nursery garden.
The children have helped build obstacle courses, houses and tents; been on big hunts;
looked at books; explored the sand and water trays; as well as drawing large and small pictures using paint or chalk.

On Monday we all woke to the sad news of the passing Pope Francis whose life was lived in prayer and devotion to God. Pope Francis lived a simple life and show Jesus’ love to all he met.
Father in heaven, we praise your name
for all who have finished this life loving and trusting you, for the example of their lives, and the peace in which they rest.
We praise you today for your servant Francis and for all you did through him.
Meet us in our sadness and fill our hearts with praise and thanksgiving for the sake our risen Lord, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Easter Baptism Mass
The Easter Vigil, also known as the Paschal Vigil, and Easter day are central liturgies in the liturgical year for the Catholic Church as it is a time of great spiritual renewal.
This is a special occasion where those preparing to join the Church through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) and children are baptized, and/or confirmed and welcomed into full communion as children of God into the Christian family.
On Saturday night in St Colman's Church in Cosham and on Sunday Morning in St Paul's church, Fr Andrew baptised more than 20 individuals, adults and children and some of the children are members from our school community. A truly wonderful celebration and a huge congratulations to you all.
Church Choir
On Wednesday morning during the School Easter mass, Fr Andrew blessed and gave to Sharon, Jana, Alissa, Ade and Alisson a special recognition and a formal enrollment as part of the Church choir.
Thank you girls for your commitment to enriching Sunday masses at St Paul's Church with your beautiful voices.
We are so proud of you all.
