Year 2 is a fun, confidence-building year where children begin to feel like “big” learners. We build on the basics learned in Year 1, becoming more independent readers, writers, and problem-solvers. Lessons often focus on strengthening phonics, developing clearer writing, and tackling more structured maths, including number bonds, simple multiplication, and practical problem-solving. It’s also the year of the KS1 SATs, though these are kept low-stress and woven naturally into everyday learning. Children explore wider topics through science, history, geography, art, and music, with plenty of hands-on activities and chances to be creative.
Class Teacher - Mrs K Hammond
( Mrs Kirke: Tuesday afternoon Science)
Learning Assistant - Mrs Bratby
Learning Assistant - Mrs Agatiello
Registration takes place promptly at 8:45 am. The children will complete their reading for pleasure time, where they are able to choose a book they enjoy.
Phonics starts at 9am followed by Literacy and maths (including calculations) in the morning session.
The afternoon sessions are used to teach the remaining subjects: RE, science, history, geography, PE, art, DT, music RSE and computing.
A small amount of homework to help children consolidate their learning is given weekly.
Friday is French Friday with the register taken in French and prayers in French too.
To ensure the children are knowing more and remembering more, Friday is Flashback Friday with four retrieval questions set each week to see if the children have retained the previous knowledge taught.
We also learn poems on a Friday to enhance our reading and our writing. This is Poetry Friday.
At St. Mary’s, in everything we say and do we follow the teaching of Jesus.
1. We always listen carefully so that we can learn and be safe.
2. We work hard and persevere to achieve our best.
3. We take responsibility for our actions.
4. We show good manners by being kind and treating others as we would like to be treated.
5. We value and care for our school and all the things in it.
6. When lining up and walking round school, we always walk quietly.
It is essential that children read every day, ideally to a parent so that the children can clarify any vocabulary they are unsure about and also so that they can discuss and pick apart what was read.
Your child will receive homework on Seesaw on a Friday (Maths, Reading and Phonics). Please complete this in the pink book.
Our class trip is a visit to Walsall Art gallery and the leather museum. This enhances our Art and DT skills.

St. Teresa of Calcutta, lovingly known as Mother Teresa, devoted her life to serving the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world. Born in 1910 in what is now North Macedonia, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious order dedicated to caring for those in need. Through her compassion, humility, and unwavering faith, she became a global symbol of kindness and humanitarian service. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, St. Teresa continues to inspire people of all ages to live with generosity, love, and respect for the dignity of every person.
In year 2 we want to follow the example set by St Teresa of Calcutta. We want to be kind and follow the Catholic Social Teaching ‘ The Common Good’.
