Welcome to the St Helen's Herald!
Welcome to the fourth issue of the St Helen's Herald!
We hope you enjoy reading!
On Monday 13th June 2022, the year 6 children set off for their residential trip to PGL Shropshire.
After a stop at the amazing RAF Museum, they headed to the PGL site where they unpacked in their cabins. Their week was full of awesome activities such as: archery, rifle shooting, climbing wall, high ropes and a GIANT swing (plus many more).
Many children conquered their fears on this trip and made memories that will last a life time.
The year 6 children want to give a huge thank you to the teachers that made the trip possible!
On Thursday 9th June we had a special visitor in school, Jamie Knight. He is a Freestyle Footballer with an amazing talent.
We were lucky enough to see Jamie in action in a whole school assembly as well as take part in workshops where we got to learn some new skills ourselves.
Children stated that "I have learnt some cool skills and can't wait to keep practising at home".
Thank you to Jamie for this and to Mr Lewis for organising such an awesome day!
After the country celebrated the Queen's jubilee celebrations during half term, at St Helen's we continued to celebrate!
Many classes took part in workshops and activities to learn more about our Queen as she celebrated 60 years in her role.
To finish off our celebrations we had mass at the convent followed by a wonderful day filled with activities organised by the School Council and yummy treats in our classes.
God Save The Queen.
For this issue we met with the lovely Miss Cook, to learn more about her.
Q: What inspired you to become a teacher?
A: As a young person I was part of St Margaret's youth group; I volunteered to be part of HCPT’s Canning Town Tigers. It was working with young people during this time that inspired me to pursue a career in teaching. Becoming a teaching assistant at St Helen’s confirmed the fulfilling and rewarding aspects of teaching and confirmed that this was the job for me!
Q: We all know you love teaching in Reception, but if you had to do another job, what would it be?
A: I would like to be a princess in the Disneyland character parades. I think it is well known at St Helen's for my love of Minnie Mouse and all the Disney characters. I think I would enjoy bringing this to life.
Q: What are your hobbies outside of school?
A: I am a mum to my two children, Jaiden and Amelia. I also enjoy going on holiday and exciting days out. When I have free time I like to go swimming.
Q: What was your most embarrassing moment when you was a child?
A: I was a reader at mass; the page had turned and I read the wrong reading for the wrong day. I was promptly made aware and had to change the reading and start again. This has always made me weary when now publicly reading.
Q: If you could go back in time to any date, what would it be and why?
A: I would return to the 50’s. The jive was popular at this time as well as dance halls. I would love to be part of those events. I’m not a trained dancer but I thoroughly enjoy watching and pretending I can dance in those styles.
Here at The St Helen's Herald, we like to know what you, our readers, think about different aspects of our school, life or current events.
This issue we want to know which after school club you would most like to see added.
The year 6's are busy preparing for their end of year production. This will take place in July and we are sure it will be a spectacular show!
Lights, Camera, ACTION!
On Monday the 27th June our annual sports day will be happening at school. With many different sports ranging from long jump to sprinting, 4 teams (houses) will battle it out.
Which house will take the cup? St John Bosco? St Hermione? St Margaret? or St Martin?
Make sure to have good sportsmanship and try your best.
Most of all, lets have fun!
On the 11th July 2022, our amazing year 5's will be performing at the Hackney Empire to a sell out crowd.
They have been working hard throughout the year to learn the songs and work alongside other Newham schools to bring this performance together.
We know they will sing the roof off of the Hackney Empire, good luck year 5!
As May was the month of Mary, we thought it would be good to share some interesting facts about Our Lady.
Mary was born in 18BC and died just after 30 AD or 33 AD.
Mary is celebrated in May as May is the height of Spring and is said to be the most beautiful month.
Mary is important because she gave birth to Jesus and is seen as the mother of the church.
Mary always wears blue because it symbolizes the sky and was an expensive colour to produce in paintings.
In portraits of Mary she is also seen wearing read as it symbolises royalty.
Mary was the first person to see and speak to Jesus when he rose from the dead.
Prayers to Mary is memory of the mysterious of faith.
