Ooh La La... French Day

BONJOUR, we had an amazing French day, with an amazing French atmosphere and extremely tasty food. We celebrate French day every year at St Helen's and we all love practising the language and learning about French speaking countries (and eating the yummy food too!).

On the day, the year 5's went round to spread the French spirit to their peers. The year 6's worked in the French market, there was: chocolate, cheese, bread and sausage (Chocolat, Fromage, Pain et Saucisson) , all the French favourites. What was your favourite from the collection? (answer below in our poll!)

London Youth Games - The Finals

The St Helen's athletics team has been flying high recently. On the 22nd March 2022, they represented the whole of Newham at the London Youth Games Finals. This competition saw all the best schools from 12 London boroughs compete to find out which team was the best in London.

After a a really tough day of both track and field events, our team placed second! They missed out on first place by only 6 points. When speaking to the team they said "we are gutted that we didn't get first place, especially because we were so close to first, be we are still proud to have qualified to the next stage".

The coaches, teachers and all of us at the newspaper are really proud of the team. We hope to see some of them in Team GB in the future.

Shakespeare, Oh Shakespeare

The past few weeks the whole school has had Shakespeare spirit! Every year group has been looking at a different play by William Shakespeare. We have took part in great workshops that allowed us to act out the plays that we were studying.

Year 1 - A Midsummer Nights Dream

Year 2 - The Tempest

Year 3 - Twelfth Night

Year 4 - Macbeth

Year 5 - Romeo and Juliet

Year 6 - A Midsummer Nights Dream

Keep a look out for all of your lovely Shakespeare work on the display boards around the school!

St Helen's are money WISE!

Six year 6 pupils recently went to a Moneywise challenge at Stratford Youth Centre, hosted by Dot Dot Fire. This competition involved our two teams battling against lots of other Newham schools on an app. They had to race around a virtual neighbourhood and answer questions about money and saving.

The competition started very close with both of our teams jumping around the leader board. In the final moments it was clear we had thrashed the competition. Team 1 placed first and team 2 placed fourth (missing out on the bronze medal by only 50 points).

Well done to both the teams on bringing home another trophy for the school!

Get to know...

For this issue we met with the one and only, Mr Myers!

Q: What inspired you to become a teacher?

A: When I was younger I went to China and started to teach English to Chinese people. It was there that I realised that teaching was the job for me. So, I came to work at St Helen's and trained to be a teacher.

Q: We all know you love teaching Maths, but if you had to do another job, what would it be?

A: I would love to be a cricket player, or someone who makes crosswords. I also wouldn't mind being a university lecturer.

Q: What are your hobbies outside of school?

A: My hobbies outside of school include cooking (and eating), watching and playing sports such as football and cricket. I also enjoy cycling and often ride my bike to school.

Q: What was your most embarrassing moment when you was a child?

A: My most embarrassing moment has to be when I was at school and I was using a compass (a tool used to draw accurate circles) and it went straight through my thumb.

Q: If you could go back in time to any date, what would it be and why?

A: I would probably go back in time to around 1730-1750's. This is because Hogarth William was alive in this time and he is my favourite painter. His paintings made that time look like a cool time to live in.
