The geography curriculum intends to inspire pupils to understand the world around them, extending their knowledge from their local area and beyond. Pupils learn about diverse places, people and environment (human and physical) through practical fieldwork on the school grounds and the local area. It is essential that pupils are competent in geographical skills needed for map reading and interpreting and communicating data collected from fieldwork.
The geography curriculum embeds Gospel values and Catholic Social teaching through developing pupils’ understanding of tolerance and peace and stewardship. Pupils are provided with opportunities to care for the world, lead by example and build tolerance for other cultures. At St. Helen’s pupils are encourage to explore the world and follow Pope Francis’ Laudato Si teachings.
The skills acquired in the geography curriculum allow pupils to deepen their understanding of the earth’s features and how it has changed over time, what their role is and the significance of geography learning.
