Computing Department

Computers are now part of everyday life and, for most of us, technology is essential to our lives, at home and at work. ‘Computational thinking’ is a skill that all pupils must learn if they are to be ready for the workplace and able to participate effectively in the digital world. The new national curriculum for computing has been developed to equip young people in England with the foundational skills, knowledge and understanding of computing they will need for the rest of their lives. Through the new programme of study for computing, they will learn how computers and computer systems work, they will design and build programs, they will develop their ideas using technology, and create a range of digital content. At St Chad’s the Computing Curriculum is offered at all Key Stages. Years 7, 8 and 9 follow units of work that allow them to access the new national curriculum strands, giving them the opportunity for further study at Key Stage 4 and beyond.

KS3 LOCKDOWN 2020

Within Computing, KS3 pupils have been digging deep into their creative skills and planning a project around a ‘Small actions big change’ campaign. Whether it’s recycling, re using plastic bags or simply being kinder to each other, this has been a project where their creativity really has sparkled. Pupils were asked to research their campaign idea, design a logo and a digital poster. The competition to design a logo was a big hit with students, although it was a tough challenge for the department to choose winners as they were all so good. Well done to our winners whose work is displayed here, and well done to everyone for the amazing work produced.

KS4 LOCKDOWN 2020

Creative iMedia pupils have excelled within their coursework preparation skills during lockdown. From mood boards to visualisation diagrams they have become designers for a magazine company and a developed advertising flyers for a fun fair roller coaster ride. They have practiced exam questions, progressed with their research skills and secured the knowledge needed for the next phase of their course. It’s certainly been a roller coaster of a term but the pupils have shown resilience and maturity in the approach to their studies. Over the summer, pupils will continue to develop their pre-production skills knowledge bank ready for September when their coursework will begin. Well done to all pupils for your hard work and effort.
