How Protagonists Learned to Embrace Their Femininity In Order to Free Themselves from Their Extreme Abuse
In The Color Purple, Celie finds liberation by looking up to Nettie, Sofia, and Shug, her greatest role model, to teach her the power of womanhood and through starting her own business. In The Handmaid’s Tale, Offred re-establishes her agency and her freedom after being confined for so long under Gilead’s terms by admiring Moira, who teaches her to be comfortable with herself.
For my Chapter Two media I decided to create a collage representing the various symbols within each novel. Both purple and red are powerful colors within their respected novels, which is why I painted half of the cardboard purple and half red. I also wanted to give my media a scrapbook feel, so I bound the two peices of cardboard with plastic wiring to make the piece stand up as seen in the last picture. Next to each picture I've written why the symbol was important as well as how it shaped the protagonist.
