the affects of Mental health on young women & the stigma amongst cultures

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

Everything Here is Beautiful by Mira T. Lee

Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

'Dear Zindagi' directed by Gauri Shinde

The stigma behind mental health in the world and how it specifically affects those of different cultures is an issue that has been put away and neglected due to societal norms and the opposition of the idea behind struggle and illness. My project highlights and explains different perspectives and stories, especially those of young women, who have faced these challenges and have pushed through the barriers created by their influences and environments.

Chapter 1: This chapter explores the differences between a young American girl and an Asian-American girl who struggle in similar yet different ways. Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, and Mira T. Lee's Everything Here is Beautiful, share unique and heart-warming stories about the recovery of both women and the beauty behind the fight to save their lives.

Chapter 2: Two very different settings and stories are presented in Chapter 2 while also shining a light on the development of two bright and independent young women. In Purple Hibiscus and in 'Dear Zindagi,' learning how to deal with their vibrant families, strict backgrounds, and troubled minds is something that both Kambili and Kaira learn to manage and overcome.
